SENTENCED to reformative DETENTION* ■ (>____ [THE PEMS SpaeUl Sen**.] WELLINGTON, October 31. Arthur Harold Anderson pleaded not guilty at the Supreme Court this morning to charges of having broken and. entered the warehouse of James Staples, Egmonfc street, to charges of having stolen boots, and to charges of having received goods knowing them to have been stolen. Mr P. S. K. Macassey, who prosecute cdj stated that there were three separate charges of breaking and entering the warehouse on April 27th, June 11th, and July 16th.. After it was <' found that the premises were broken v into a watch was set; Constable Bradley and Henry Fisk waiting inside. About 10 o'clock one night they heard a noise at the back of the warehouse, and later the accused came into the place. He was accosted by the constable and a struggle.followed. -.Th* ' constable succeeded in getting one** handcuff on Anderson, who then broke away. He was followed by the constable, who, caught him in Jessie street, but after another struggle, in which the constable used his baton, Anderson got away. He was interviewed the following day by the police, who found fresh cuts on his head and saw that his wfisfc was slightly injured. When, asked what he had done with the handcuffs he had replied that he had thrown them into the sea. Nothing was- found in Anderson's room, but in a suit case found on » shelf dpposite his door were discovered shoes and boots similar to those kept in the warehouse. After evidence had been given for the Crown and counsel's addresses and summing up had been heard, the jnrr this afternoon found Anderson guilty of breaking and entering with .intent to commit theft, and he was sentenced to reformative detention for a period not exceeding three years.
