N.Z. CRICKETERS' DEFEAT. MATCH IN SYDNEY. IBT CABLE TRIiS ASSOCIATION COPTTUGHT.) AUBTRAUAIT AND N.Z. CABLJ ASSOCIATION.) (I.V'-cived October 31st. 7.10 p.m.)
SYDNEY, October 31. The New Zealand cricketers continued their second innings under muggy conditions. It was soon evident the players were feeling the heat and the wk-ket was hard. A quarter of an hour after the commencement Mills snicked a ball, which Oldfield accepted. Mills had been uncomfortable when facing Gregory and McNamee. Lowry and Blunt again became associated in a valuable partnership. Bluntplayed a sound game all round scored much faster than Lowry. Euns came slowly, the first 100 taking !»S minutes. Blunt scored 50 while Lowry made 23 in little over an hour. When his score reached 53, Blunt hit O'Reilly to cover and started to run but Lowry sent him back. He slipped, and fell, and Andrews returned the ball quickly to Oldfield, who snapped the bails off before the batsman was able to get up. As on Saturday Lowry soon followed Blunt, Andrews accepting an easy return. The New Zealand skipper was lucky in the early part of his innings, but "later made some nice strokes. He and Blunt put on S4, the board showing 110 runs for three wickets when Blunt went out after batting for 80 minutes and hitting four fours. Lowry batted 106 minutes.
When the total was 123 Alcott gave a., easy chance to McNamee, but this was not accepted. Page, who was well supported by Daere, excelled in sharp running between the wickets, and gained runs which the earlier batsmen had neglected. Both hit out freely_ and found Andrews very much to their liking, knocking him all round tho ground. The pair sent up 50 in 27 minutes, Daere hitting a sixer, bis brilliant play rousing the enthusiasm of the crowd. He passed, Page, whose total was 34, in half nn hour, each stroke being roundly acclaimed. Page also was attractive and was given his share of applause. Daere brought up his 50 in 38 e minutes, but four minutes later McNamee bowled him. He had hit four fours and a six. His partnership with Page was the brightest of the match, yielding 95 runs. The total was 222 for six wickets, Page's score being 44. Page continued brightly till the total was 232, when Gregory clean bowled him.
With the disappearance of Page all hope of Now Zealand avoiding an innings defeat seemed gone, but the tail wagged vigorously, Henderson and Merritt batting in great style and losing no opportunities. A great ovation was given them when they secured the necessary total. The last wicket yielded 42. New South Wales commenced .their second innings, requiring eight'runs to win, Kippax and Phillips going to the 'crease. The runs were obtained by extras consisting of seven byes and one leg bye. New South Wales therefore, won' by ten wickets. The seores arc:—
