FIXED EASTER.

BUSINESS MEN IN FAVOUR. At yosterday's session of the annual eonforence of "the Associated Chambers of Commerce, a resolution was carried in favour of the stabilisation of Easter. The matter was discussed when a Wellington remit was submitted:— Mr A. T. Markman (Wellington) moved tho adoption of the folding:— I 'That this Conference makes enquiry as to the likely reception by commercial circles, by religious denominations, and by others affected, of the proposal to stabilise the date of Easter." J He said that the League of Nations, i International Chamber of Commerce aitd Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire had all had this suggestion under consideration, and requests had been made that Chambers of Commerce in the various countries might represent the matter to their respective Governments. The main obstacle to be surmounted was the convincing of the churches of the need of j reform and in a matter such as this, of world-wide interest, a responsible demand had first to be created. The movement in favour of tins reform had been gaining force, and with strong representation for the stabilisation of Easter there was every possibility that religious bodies would meet the request, but there might be objections from certain quarters. It was understood they were not actually hostile to the proposal, but were disinclined to move until requested by the Governments. The date generally approved was the Sunday following the second Saturday in April, this date being preferred to the second Sunday in April, which might fall on April Bth, in Which case the Festival of the Annunciation (Lady Day) and Passion Sunday would coincide. Mr D. Seymour (Hamilton) said they could not start this movement too soon. Mr W. Gow (Dunedin): There is no hitrm in enquiring. The remit was adopted.
