SWIMMING.
CANTERBURY CENTRE. Tim annual meeting of tho , Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last night, MrM. E. Lyons presiding. The annual report stated that at present there were twelve clubs affiliated to the Association through the Centre. It was a matter of regret that the Addington Club, through lack of support, had been Unable to retain its affiliation. A new club, the Waltham Club, had joined up during the year. The balance-sheet showed that the Centre 3 finances were almost depleted. However, if the queen carnival was a success, tho finances should be placed in a firm position. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman stated that, although the balance-sheet was not what they would like to see, nevertheless swimming had advanced in Canterbury. Ho would like to see a "learn to swim" week inaugurated. It was remarkable to see the number of people, especially young people, who could not swfm, despite the facilities that Christchurch had. It wai desirable that the public should get the impression that the Centre did something more than organise caTnivals. Ho referred to the success of Mr I>. P. Lindsay at the New Zealand championships, and congratulated him on Uis performances. He added that there was a lack of lady swimmers, and he hoped that the clubs would do something to remedy that' defect. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Tho election of officers rejulted as follows: —President, Mr M. E. Lyons; hon. secretary, Mr 'W. S. Burford; hon. treasurer, Mr F. J. Cook; local officer, Mr T. H. Harker; handicapper, Mr C. Atkinson; delegate on executive, Mr C. E. Riordan: hon. auditor, Mb R. L. Hicks; diving judges, Messrs C. Atkinson, L. Annand, T. H. Harker, F. L. Collins, J. Jackson, J. R. Baehanan, and D. Brown; delegate on New Zealand Association, Mr Coulter; timekeepers, Messrs F. R. Wheoley, O. B. Eikenstein, G. W. Cooke, H. Bieh, C. VT. Smith, P. Meniies, V. Atkinson, and F. L. Collins; water polo selector, Mr L. Annahd; diving handicapper, Mr 0. Atkinson ; educational officer, Mr M. E. Lyons. A discussion arose from the application by several clubs for. permission to hold certain championships at their carnivals. It was
pointed out that the Centre wa* Jn HMO of funds to send »•> .Canterbury team U> the championship*. Therefore, before any.or the Canterbury championships wereallotted to clubs, the Centre should have H$ enoiM as to those to be held at a carnival to ran* funds. . ... , . .. It -was decided that a carnival be run by the Centre, at which the following championchips bo held:—22o yards (men), ladies and men's diving, men's backstrofce, 100 yards intermediate (boys). On the motion of Miss Brown, it was decided that, the queen carnival be discontinued; ilins Brown stated that none of the larger clubs had decided to take part in tho earnival, and it was unfair for tho smaller clubs to continue, with the scheme when the larjjcr clubs would reap tho benefit of it. The chairman was appointed manager of tho Canterbury team to travel to the* Dominion championships at Dunedin.
