PAINTINGS FOR MUSEUM.

TWO VAN DER VELDENS. Two paintings in oil by P. van der Velden have been received at the Christchurch Museum, and will prove a valuable addition to the art exhibits. They are the gift of the late Mr StephenPowell, and have just been handed over to the museum authorities by Mrs Powell. The pictures have not yet been hung. The subjects are "Tho Donkey Player," representing a cosmopolitan crowd playing cards at an inn, and "An Old Fisherman." The latter is a study of. an old salt equipped with sou'-wester and oilskin coat. It is executed in van der Velden's well-known style, with dark.background and subject, .the light playing fitfully on the ancient mariner's crafty face and reflecting from his dark sea-faring garb.
