PUPILS' CONCERT. On Friday evening, in St. Barnabas' Schoolroom, Fendalton, an enjoyable pianoforte recital was giveu by pupils of Miss Olive Cooper, L.A.B. The programme contained, among other items, pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Pm-cell, Schumann, Chopin, Grieg, Cyril Scott, Norman O'Neill, and Sibelius. All the pupils played well, reflecting much credit on their teacher, and every piece was memorised. ALL SPORTS ASSEMBLY. The big carnival dance -which will be held at the- Rolleston street Hall to-night promises to be the best yet held by the All Sports Assembly. A larper band, under the direction of Mr Teddy Jones, will be in attendance. The second heat of the foxtrot competition will also take place. The vocal chords of. women being shorter than those of men. less energy is required for a woman to talk than for a man.

RACES AT MOTUKARARA. Through beautiful, smiling country, arousing passing interest in herds of Hereford and Friesian cattle, and flocks of contented-looking sheep and gaily-frisking lambs, hundreds of motor-cars travelled from all directions on Saturday to Motukarara racecourse, whero the Banks PeninsulaRacing Club held a most successful Meeting. Drooping laburnum in wonderful bloom, fences of gorse and broom, giant buttercups by the roadside, even stretches of flowering turnips, all with their golden glory set in colourful relief against the green background of fields and hills, gladdened the eyes of city dwellers, and high hawthorn hedges, scenting the air with their lovely white, and pale pink blossoms, were a glorious sight, worth going miles to see. Many of the visitors to the races picnicked nnder the sheltering trees at the racecourse or lunched! in their cars, the kindly residents of the district, in many cases, entertaining their city friends with most generous hospitality. WINTER GARDEN CABARET,

There was a large gathering of friends aDd visitors to the City at the Winter Garden Cabaret on Saturday. The ballroom was decorated with baskets of ferns and streamers, and supper tables with vases o£ tulips and daisies. As an interlude, ten of Miss Bessie Macdonald's pupils, with-Miss Muriel Johns as vocalist, delighted those present with a ballet dance, the item being enthusiastically encored. The music was supplied by Bailey's Jazz Band. DANCING-CLASS DEMONSTRATION. The annual demonstration of Miss Comyns Thomas's dancing class pupils was held at the Caledonian Hall on Saturday evening. A very varied programme was opened by a combined march of small and older girls, followed by some Greek exercises, which are always a pleasure to watch. An amusing item was "Four Dolls," danced by M. .Anderson, 0. GiLl, PGould, and J. Vincent, and "WaltzTime" by B. Nicholson, S. Buchanan, J. Anderson, S. Kincaid, and B. Gould, and a sailors' hornnijpo by M. Allard, N. Hitchcock, J. Clowes, D. Pairman, M. Cox, and R. Allard. Both were gracefully executed. A solo dance, "A Butterfly," by J. Turnbull, was greatly applauded, and a ballot of small girls—J. Clowes, V. Forsythe, P. Masterson, J. Anderson, M. Anderson, B. and P. Gould, O. Gill, S. Kincaid, B. Nicholson, and S. Buchanan —gave an attractive item, "Rosebuds." A mazurka by B. Yellowlees, P. Johns. M. Morrison, G. Mooie, S. Johns, and E. Everist, and a "Spring Ballet - ' by D. Pairman, J. Turnbull. M. Webb, M. Cox, M. Forbes, and J. Forbes were both gracefully danced, as was also a Tyrolese Peasants' danco by S. Johns, G. Moore, B. Yellowlees, R. Morrison, N. Hitchcock, and P. Johns. An Irish Jig, in which two smiling colleens, P. Masterson and V. Forsythe, danced a sprightly measure met with much approval, and was followed by "A Lonely Nymph," impersonated by D. Pairman in a pretty petalled green dress. A gipsy ballet, in which a troupo of gailyclad gipsies made themselves and their audience very happy, and a cymbal dance by R. Allard brought tho first half of the programme to a close. Then followed an operatic ballet, gracefully danced, a Bacchante by S. WEDDINGS. MANNING— ' A wedding of considerable interest to a. wide circle of friends was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Lyttelton, recently, when Beatrice Maud, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Wales, was married to Herbert George, youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs R. Manning, North Canterbury. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers by girl friends of the bride. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A J. Petrie, and Mr Swaby presided at the organ. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a charming frock of powder blue georgette with panels of silver lace and hat of silver crinoline straw trimmed with pink and blue roses. Sho carried a shower bouquet of shaded hothouse flowers and maiden hair fern with silver streamers. The chief bridesmaid, Miss Elsie Pickford (Ashburton), wore a dainty frock of cream chiffon taffeta, with sleeves and overdress uf lace. Her hat of cream crinoline straw was trimmed : with velvet ribbon and blue flowers, and she carried a bouquet of apricot | shaded flowers. The second bridesmaid, Miss Jean Ferguson (Waipara), niece of the bridegroom, wore a pretty frock of primrose taffeta, with long, bodice and petal skirt. Her hat was of white crinoline straw trimmed with mauve velvet ribbon and flowers, and she carried a bouquet of pale mauve flowers. Both wore signet rings, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr J. Dalton (Waipara) acted as best man.

After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Excelsior Hall.
