Sir Hcaton and Lady Rhodes and Miss Hynes arrived from Wellington on Saturday. Sir William and Lady Sim. who have been in Wellington for the past few weeks, passed through Christchurch on Saturday on their return to Dunedin.
Mrs Alex. Johnston (Blenheim) has returned home after paying a short visit to her fattier, Mr Leicester Matson, and Mrs Matson.
Miss Barbara Gould (Fejidalton) is visiting Mrs Ynyr Robinson, North Canterbury. Miss Kathleen Bristcd (Avonside) has returned from a visit to the North Island. "Mr and Mrs Jack Matson arc arriving in Christcliurch from England early next week. Mrs A. P. Bennett (Hataitai, Wellington), who has been staying with Mrs C. de Pass, Papanui road, is at present the guest of her mother, Mrs S. Johnston, Redcliffs. A Press Association cablegram received from Toronto on Saturday states that the wedding took place on Thursday of Sister Barbara Mackenzie, of the Wellington General Hospital, to Mr Irving .Robertson, general manager of the Toronto "Evening Telegram."
Dame Christina Massey has taken up her residence in the home of her son, Mr F. 0. Massey, at Epsom, Auckland, \vhilo he and Mrs Massey are spending a long vacation at Milford.
Mrs 11. Kerr and Miss M. Kerr (Fairlie) have returned home after spendiug a short holiday in Temuka.
Miss Ethel Wallace, the young .Dunedin violinist, late of Greymouth, has passed the examination for L.T.C.L. with honours. * ,
The engagement is announced of Thelma Doreen, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Haydon, Iliccarton. to Douglas Arthur.* younger son of Mrs and the late Mr A. E. M. Young, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs' E. Frost (Studholme •Junction), Mr and Mrs A. B. McDowell (Oamaru). Mr and MrsG. W. Thompson (Oamaru), and Miss E. S. Wallace (Diinedin) are amongst recent arrivals at the Roval Hotel.

Many Canterbury residents, writes our- London correspondent, will be interested to' hear of th"e ; activities of Mrs-"Widdowson, better known in New Zealand as Miss Kathleen Cresswell. Mrs Widdoivson, who lives in Odiham, ■Hampshire, has trained a band of village girls as a costume company, known locally as "The Melody Maids*."' The party gives a series of-variety entertainments in Odiham and the neighbouring villages, where they are always accorded a warm welcome, and the proceeds of the concerts are devoted to the Cottage Hospital. Mrs Widdowson, who is an accomplished musician, coni.poses most the music for the programmes and in many cases writes also tlie words of the. songs and choruses.
