Miss Fryer .Knowles street'; has returned from a visit to Hawke's Bay. : Dr. and Mrs C. L. Nedwill (Cashmere Hills) have returned to the City from Mount Somcrs. Mr and Mrs M. H. Godby left, yesterday for a short visit to South Canterbury. They will attend the Wa.ihi .school sports at Winchester to-day. Mis 3 Bromley Cocks is- visiting Mrs Hawkins Vicarage, Glenmark). Miss Lynskpy (Wellington), who has been staying with Mrs T. G. Blackwell (Kaiapoi), is now the guest of Mrs A. C. Nottingham (Halswell). Mr and .Mrs Irving Sladen arrived back in New Zealand on the R.M.fc. Corintbic after an extended tour abroad embracing the United States, Great Britain, and the Continent. Miss Jaqucs-Blaekmore (Kelburu, Wellington) is at present visiting her aunt, Mrs Llewcllyn-Glarke' (Prcbbleton). Mr and Mrs C. M. Bbwden (Wellington), Mr and Mrs W. L. Bell iDunedin) aro at the Clarendon Hotel. Miss Edith Irving (London) is visiting her brother, Dr. W. Irving (Armagh street West). Mr and Mrs P. H. .Shand and Mrs J. B. Blair (Taieri) arc staving at the Royal Hotel. Miss Aileen Ronnie (Fendalton) lias returned from a short holiday in Wellington. Miss Dorothy Moore (Sprcydon) is on a short ivisit to her aunt, Mrs A. G. Hart ("The Cliffs," Timaru). The engagement is announced, in a northern paper, of James Leslie, only son of Mr and Mrs J. J. Rowo (North Richmond), to Rnye, second daughter of Mr and Mrs G. P. dc Castro (Pacroa, Auckland). In the presence of a large gathering of the Presbyterian clergy, the Gover-nor-General, Sir Charles Eergusson, on Thursday laid the foundation stone, of the Maori Girls' College, at Marten, replacing the present old building at Tnrakina. , "" The Governor-General, Sir diaries Fergusson, has received thp following cable message from the Secretary of State for' Dominion Affairs in reply to the message sent in connexion with the death of the Mamuis of Cambridge:—"Her Majesty the Queen desires me to convey to your Excellency and to the Government" and the people of New Zealand her grateful thanks for their expression of deep sympathy in her bereavement.'' Preliminary arrangements are well in ; hand for the Coster Ball, which is to be : held in the Caledonian Hall on Monday, November 7th, in aid of the Girl Guide movement. As the ball is the first of its kind, held in Canterbury, it is not surprising that it is arousing unusual interest, which augurs well for a record success.
In connexion with the presentation in New Zealand of Gilbert and Sullivan's melodious and picturesque comic opera, "Puddigore," by the J. C. Williamson Company, it is interesting to note that the striking and beautiful lostumes nre by B. J. Simmons and Co. (London), Morris Anger and Sons i London'', Miss Emily Nathan (J, C. Williamson. Ltd., Sydney), Mrs Robins (J C. Williamson, Ltd.,* Melbourne).
The- management of the Winter Garden announces its usual cabaret dance for to-night. As a special attraction Miss Bessie Mncdonald's cabaret dancers will appear. Dr. Beveridge Davis and assistants of the Ambulance Brigade gave a practical demonstration of First Aid in mnor accidents to members and friend? of the Home Economies' Association last night. There was a good attendance and all were keenlv interested in the methods employed to assist in ease of accidents. A'hearty vote of thanks was accorded Dr. Davis and his very able assistants, also to the patient. Miss Blackmore presided. On Thursday evening at her residence in Hackthorne road, Mrs Jack was hostess at a. "Gift Evening" given in honour of Miss Gwen Turner, whose marriage will shortly take place. The evening was spent, in musical items and the opening of the parcels by the bride elect was the cause of much'merriment. Amongst those present were: .Mr and Mrs Jack, Mr and Mrs E.
