ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. In recognition of the able manner in which he had conducted the Allenton School choir, Mr W. Morrish was presented with a volume of Shellev's poems by the children of the choir, at a concert on Thursday night. In making the presentation the headmaster (llr W. S. Pratt) eulogised the work of Mr Morrish in giving the pupils tuition in singing which, he stated, was a valuable part of their education. Mr Morrish suitably replied stating that he ; hoped to continue the work next year. Loyal Ashburton Lodge. The N.G., Bro. H. Donaldson, presided over the meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge on Thursdav evening. It was decided to accept the" invitation of the Loyal Methven Lodge to attend j its annual church parade. Sick pay ' amounting to £l4 16s 8d was passed j for payment. One candidate was proposed, and three were initiated into the Order. Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, ; before Messrs W. H. Bundle and E. Clark, J.P.'s, judgment for the plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: S. J. Pratley v. D. J. Storrier, claim £5; Knox Bros. v. W. T. Thompson, claim £l9 6s 9d. ' Rounders Competition. The primary schools' rounders competition was advanced a further stage at the Domain on Thursday, with the following result: Allenton 116 defeated Borough 76; Ea3t Ashburton 92 defeated Tinwald 67. Allenton School Concert. To augment the funds of the Alienton School a concert was given by the ehoir under the direction of the conductor (Mr W. Morrish) on Thursday night, when there was a good attendance of parents and friends. The children acquitted themselves well and a variety of items were presented. The Gala. A further endeavour to increase the funds of the Advance Ashburton Association will be made by the promoters of the Gala on the Domain to-day. Commencing with a procession, the programme will include a number of amateur running, cycling, and novelty events on the oval, while sideshows will be in full swing. The principal attraction during the evening will be the crowning of the successful Queen (Miss Ngaire Rainey), and the conferring of honours upon various officials connected with the Gala. Clay Bird Championship. The Canterbury Clay Bird Championship to be decided on the Ashburton racecourse to-day, under the auspices of t}:<3 Ashburt&n Gun Club, has attracted entries from the best shots in the province, while practically every club will be represented. Shooting commences at 10.30 a.m. with a £2O clay pigeon handicap match to be followed by the championship event. Laud Sale. A block of 729 acres of land in the Mitcham district was sold by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., yesterday on behalf of the mortgagee, to Mr W. H. Wilkinson, Chertsey. The price obtained was £8 10s per acre. Cricket. The Ashburton primary schools commenced their annual cricket competitions yesterday. Allenton met Borough. Batting first, the latter made 24 to which Allenton replied with 55 for six wickets. Borough went in again and made only 17. Allenton therefore won by an and 4 wickets. Convent beat Tinwald by an innings, and Borough obtained a two point win over Convent. Technical School Sports. The concluding events in the Technical .School sports were held yesterday morning, and resuited as follows: Boya' Senior Championship—B. Spellerburg (23 pointa) 1, Holland (16 points) 2.
