The sis mouths' trial of smokeless coal upon which the Railways Department has embarked already has had a noticeable effect in reducing the smoke nuisance in the vicinity of the engine-sheds at Elisor's road, Limvood. Regarding the condition of Lincoln road, Cr. G. 11. Hunter, acting-chair-man of the City Council's Works Committee, stated yesterday that the work of improving the roadwav will be put in hand after Carnival Week. As the road is a boundary one between the City and the Wafmairi County, and as the county had made no provision on its estimates for the current financial year for work on Lincoln road, the City Council will provide finance in the meantime, and the county is to make provision for repayment on its estimates for nest year. When the Assistant City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) returns from his visit to Australia, Cra. G. R. Hunter and E. H. Andrews, to whom was referred the task of drawing up recommendations to the City Council regarding the City Engineer's (Mr A. R. Galbraith's) city streets reconstruction scheme, will go into the matter. Referring to the subject yesterday, Cr. Hunter remarked that in all probability the reconstruction of the streets carrying the heaviest traffic would be undertaken first, as such work, when completed, would have an appreciable effect on reducing the cost of maintenance.
