MR AMERY'S VISIT.
TO THU EDITOR C? THZ PRESS. Sir,—The .exceedingly condensed report, in. your issue of this date, of the discussion yesterday afternoon at the meeting convened by the Mayor to make arrangements for the above, or, possibly, the confusion arising from the discussion of so many conflicting (and more or less selfita) claims on Mr Amery's far too limited time in Christchurch, must be responsible for the totally erroneous statement in that report that the garden party at historic Riccarton was beine; undertaken by the Imperial Mission. It is only due to the Victoria League to state that from the very earliest attempt to organise such a reception for Mr and Mrs Amery, that body claimed the privilege of doing its part, and that this function is being entirely organised by it under the presidency of i Mrs Deans. ' I
The Imperial Mission lias only concerned itself with the holding of a reception, including an address by Mr Amery, to which as many as possible of the'general public could be admitted.
Though I advocated, at the meeting, that the reception should be held in the Barracks in the afternoon, and that the Mayor should be asked to invite the citizens to observe a half-holi-day to allow them to attend in their thousands, and thus show greater honour - to a distinguished visitor, I am equally pleased that it is to be held there in the evening. Such an afternoon reception need not have interfered in the least with the garden partv at Eiccarton.—Yours, etc., EDW. G. LEVINGE, Chairman, Empire Industries Association. (Formerly the Imperial Mission.) October 27th.
