The monthlv meeting of the Shirley Branch of the'W.C.T.U. was held in St. Stephen's Sunday School. The president presided over a good attendance. An apology was received from the secretary, Mrs Smith. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs Mclntyre in her illness and a welcome was extended to Mrs Green. Mrs Day gave an incresting account of the Convention held in Ash burton. A letter was received from Mr Holland regarding the Gambling Bill. Mrs Eountree (president) read a paper written by doctors showing how unnecessary alcohol is in eases of sickness.
RICHMOND FREE KINDERGARTEN.
At the monthly meeting of the committee it was reported that the school roll now stands at 45, seven children having left, and nine been admitted. Parents' subscription for the mouth amounted to £2 Os od. On Daffodil Day the children collected 16s 5d by means of a copper trail at their own school, this being in addition to the sale of calces, flowers, and produce. On September 12th a meeting was called of mothers and all kindergarten sympathisers, when Miss Tabart explained arrangements for a cottage flower show to be held in December. The school is much indebted to Mrs Labatt for the gift of two nicelydressed dolls. . The meeting concluded with arrangements for Saturday's fancy dress party, wUcn there will be prizes in plenty for the little folk, and afternoon tea will be served.
This evening, at the Albert Hall, a masked flannel dance and the second heat of the big fox-trot competition will he held. Mr Teddy Jones's band will provide the latest music.
