ADDINGTON MARKET.
SMALLER ENTRIES. FIRMER SALE. OTTS COHMTBCTiI. IDITOS.) The boisterous week-end pro-.-ided an illustiation of tia truth of the old proverb about "an ill wind, etc." It nSected coastal shipping t° 4n extent that changed what would have been an over-supply of stock at yesterday's market into less than s. normal enirv and vendors benefited accordingly. As it was there were well on to 1000 iat sheep forward iiom north of Cook Strait, representing drafts from Gisborne on the East Coast, to Wanganui on the West, but had all the lines arranged for como to hand this number would have been considerably augmented. Only two or three email lines of fat cattle were forward from th 3 North, and southern supplies were also much lighter. . As a result th;- easing tendency or recent sales u*as arrested. Fat catt-te opened better than list week, but Decame dragging ove- tho concluding stages. Fat sheep sold with a good deal of irregularity, and some of the auctioneers made heavy weather ol it the sale not concluding until near 6.30. It varied uo to 2s :<■ head at difierent stages but the bulk of the good aheap averaged to a shilling a head in advance of the previous week, with lighter sorts showing little change. The bulk of the northern sheep were of exceptional weights, and butcher 3 operated spiritedly for them, but at the same time' there were a few lines of particularly prime local eheep forward. Xext week's sole is a "double" one in v'ew of Carnival week, so the probabilities are that the delayed outside entries will be down for that occasion. However, it i 3 a market that absorbs a big entry of fat slock. STORE SHEEP. The entry of store sheep was much smaller than has been the case at recent Bales. The quality generally was indifferent. Included in the offering wero u. good many aged ewes and lambs, but few of the lines_ of ewes and lambs could be called attractive. The hoggets wore of .rather a. plain class. They met with a brighter demand than last week. Considering the quality of the hoggets yarded, they sold satisfactorily. Wethers also met with a bright demand without there being any marked alteration from the prices ruling last week. A couple of trucks of ewe hoggets sold at 34s 6d and . fineivoolled wether hoggets made 26s 7d.' A few 'lines were passed a.fc auction. Values wore: Two and four-toothed shorn wethers, 19s 9d to 20s 6d. , . Four and six-toothed shorn wethers, 22s to 23s 9d. Inferior two and four-toothed wethers, 26s 6a to 275. Sis and eight-toothed halfbrad wethers, 29s ld to 83a Cd. Halfbred wether hoggets, C6s 7d. Crossbred wether hoggets, 21s 4d. Halfbred ewo hoggets,' 31s (3d. Sound and failing-mouthed liaJfored ewes with , lambs-, 19s 9d to 21s 9d. Aged ewes with lambs, 13s Gd to 15s. Cull ewes and lambs, lis Sd. The following were, the principal sales, ewes and lambs selling all counted:— Ewes—Forty-five four, six, and eight-tooth halfbred and 47 lambs at 21s 9d, 50 f.m. halfbred and 44 lambs at 14s 6d, 103 f.m. halfbred and 80 lambs at lis 9d, .18 s.m. halfbred and 15 lambs at 19s 9d. Hoggets—One hundred, and twenty-eight halfbred wether at 26s 7d, 161 halfbred ewe at 34s 6d, 66 crossbred wether at 24s 4d, , SPRING LAMBS. A much larger entry, comprising 290 head, compared, with 108 last weok. Some well-grown, plump lambs were forward, but there was a decided drop-off in quality amongst the tail end. The good lambs sold very spiritedly, particularly at the outset, but the mediocre sorts slipped back in valuo as the sale proceeded. Tho number forward, as well a3 the quality, affected the competition, and between the middle and the last of the sale there was a spread of 3s to 4s a head. Good lambs were making about, a shilling a lb. • The following were the principal sales:— . On account of Jas. Moorhead (Sou(hbridge), 6 at 35s 4d to 395. 7d; K E. FAT SHEEP. A slightly smaller entry of fat sheep than usual —10J moderately filled races as against Hi last week.V A fair proportion of the entry were shorn. Several Hues of North Island sheep which arrived last week were penned up. The bulk of,the northern sheep •were big framed Romney wethers in the wool, and their quality improved the general standard of the market. The sale opened at about the preceding week's rates, but hardened 1 up after the firet couple of races. Over a. race or two of the best sheep the advance ranged up to la 6d a head, but values eased again, particularly for the lighter sheep. However, there was a further brightening over the last race, and on 'au average the market was to a Is a head better than last week. A feature of the sale was a pen o£ throe show wethers from the "Wanganui district which m£de £3 16s a head. An exceptional line of 18 shorn ewos from Geo.
