NATIONAL TRANSPORT.
GOVERNMENT SEEKS FULL DETAILS. (PRESS ASSOCI4.TIOK IT.LEGRAU.) WELLINGTON, October 26. Heferenco was made by the Prime Minister to-day to the institution ot preliminary enquiries into the transport systems of tho country. Mr Coates stated that a small Departmental subcommittee. had been investigating the information at present available, _ but more detail as to the actual position io-day was required before the question could be reviewed as a whole. He was accordingly arranging for the conspiration of the necessary facts and figures by the Public Works, P. and T., Railway, and Marine Departments (the principal Departments of State couconcerned in transport), and also the Government Statistician, _ who will obtain the necessary particulars as to the part played in the country's transport by the motor vehicle. When the information is available, the Prims Minister hopes to arrange for its consideration from every aspect in order to enable the Government to consider the question of transport from a national aspect. He did not wish it to be understood that the Government had any definite intentions, in this connexion at present. All that is at present decided is to analyse tho position to the fullest possible v, extent, and then after the most careful consideration to take what steps are considered desirable in the interests of tha country as a whole.
