HOSPITAL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The North Canterbury Hospital Board met yesterday. Present were: Messrs 11. J. Otley (chairman), F. Horrell, Clydo Carr, J. K. Archer, W. J. Walter, 11. 11, Holland, Q, Armstrong, H. R. Davison, L. B. Evans, D. McMillan, F. G. Norton, A. T. Smith, W. P. Spencer. Mcsdames A. K. Herbert, T. Green, nnd 15. R. McCombs, Dr. 11. T. D. and Dr. P. S. Foster. M Committee Report. The Hospital Committee reported as follows: The following fees have been received since the last meeting of tho Board: —Christchureh Hospital £1968 2s. 2d, dental department £3BO 0s Cd, pathological department £9O 15s lOd, physio-therapeutic department £BS 16s 6d, radiographic department £231 0s 6d, splint department £l2l 0s 4d, out-patients' department £212 15s, \radium department £6O 17s, Akaroa ; Hospital £55 2s fid, Amuri Hospital £26 6s, Chatham Islands Hospital £29 3s, Cheviot Hospital £lO Bs, Darfield Hospital £42 10s 6d, Ellesmere Hospital £29 3s 6d, Kaikoura Hosptial £59 7s Id, Lincoln Hospital £27 18b, Little River Hospital £2O 2s, Oxford Hospital £3 6s, Rangiora Hospital £92 6b* Waikari Hospital £34 3s, Lyttelton Casualty Ward £lO ,15s; total £3609 7s 3d. Tho average daily number of patients in hospital duriijg the month of September was 386, an. increase of twelve over the previous mouth. In the venereal diseases department there wero 1219 attendances, representing 261 patients, 31 of whom were new. The Director-General of Health discussed several matters with the committee, notably the Nurses' Homo> site and. the new St. Helens Hospital. Ho emphasised • his decision that the country maternity hospitals should not be used for cases other than those for which the, institutions were erected, unless in cases of extreme emergency or accident pending transfer to Ohristchurcb. The Board is recommended that in the event of the services of any of the junior resident officers being required for a second year, that the salary shall be at tho- rate of £2OO per annum. X-ray Department. The report of the \yprk dono in the X-ray department for the month was as follows: — Number of radiograms taken 522, number of treatments 7, uumber of screenings 2.47,.number of in-patients 190, number of out-patients 163. Radium Department. Dr. P. C. Fenwick reported that thirtyfour new patients were accepted for treatment during the past month at the Radium and Deep Therapy Department. The total attendance had . been 413. Forty-four applications, of radium have been made and 32 treatments with deep therapy have been given. Two hundred and eixty-six treatments with the ultra-violet rays were given. By permission of the chairman of the .'Hospital Committee a supply of radium was taken to Nelson and cases were treated there. Radium has been taken out of the hospital on two other occasions during this month. The supply of 'radium is intact, and the deep theraphy machine is working' excellently. Tuberculosis. Dr. G. J. Blackmore reported as follows: "During the month there were 220 attendances at the dispensary, of whom 77 were soldiers, and were seen by Dr. Aitken. Of the remainder, 40 were new-' cases. Twenty new eases were notified. The nurse paid 31 visits to patients in. their own homes. "The demand for beds in the institutions is keeping up. lu.one day last week amongst the patients who were sent for examination at the dispensary I found 11 who needed to be admitted to either the sanatorium or the Coronation Hospital."
