THE HANMER FIRE.
STATE SERVICE'S EFFICIENT WORK. "No forest scheme can exist now without adequate provision being made for coping with fires," said Mr C. E. Foweraker, lecturer in charge of the Canterbury College School of Forestry, frhen "discussing the. Hanmer forest fire with a reporter of The Priss yesterday. Mr Foweraker, said that most of the New Zealand bush was, while in its virgin state, fire-proof, but pines and other trees introduced for, planting purposes had to be carefully watched for outbreaks of fires, which once started spread at an amazing rate. The State Forest Service at Hanmer had a very efficient system . for fire protection, and it was no doubt on this account that they bad prevented the 'ire in their plantations from being more serious than it was. "With the high wind that was blowing," !\{r Foweraker Said, "they might have lost the whole forest, if they, had not dealt with the fire so efficiently and sntisfactorilv."
