_—t , Mr G W. Ross (Gore) is among the recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel. At the City Council meeting last evening, Cr. T. H. Butterfield was added to the Baths and Entertainment Committee. Mr D. E. Parton, Christchurch Telegraph Engineer, has returned to the City after a holiday trip to the Manawatu and Hawke's Bay districts. Lieutenant E. v L. Orr-Ewing, M.C., has arrived in Wellington by the Tahiti in order to take up his duties as A.D.C. to his Excellency the Governor-General. 'Messrs J. A. Landliss, Havelock Lonsdale, and L. H. Smith (St. Annes-on-Sea. England) are staying at Warner's Hotel. The death of Mr W. J. Hopkins, a member of the Association, was referred to with regret at last night's meeting of the Canterbury- Automobile Association. Mr T. B. Bavin, the new Premier of New South Wales, is. a native of Kaia? poi, and the Borough Council, at its meeting last night, decided to write congratulating him on his election to office. Mr J- C.' Fairbairn, District Telegraph Engineer for Canterbury, left yesterday for Tiniaru. He will return to Christchurch to-morrow. His trip south is connected with Departmental business. Messrs L. J. W. Gardner, Clive. Hill (Wellington), C. IV. Sharp (Auckland),. 0. Lewis, and It. W. G. Henderson (London), H. H. Alien (Dunedin), T. T. Gaffney (Melbourne) are among'»the guests at "the "United Service Hotel. Mr.H. E..Holland, M.P., .Leader of the • Opposition, passed through Christchurch last night on his way to ton. Mr Holland came north after laying the- foundation-stone of the new Trades Hall at Invercargill. Mr T. Trask, who has been stationmaster at for the last twelve years, is retiring oh superannuation as from November 11th. Mr J. Deaker will succeed him. Mr and Mrs Trask intend taking up their residence in Hawera. At the City Council meeting last evening the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) made (eference to the death of Mr 9 McCoy, wife of Mr W. McCoy, foreman of works at Linwood. A resolution expressing the Council's sincere sympathy with Mr McCoy in his bereavement was carried. Mr A. W. Beayen, president of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, accompanied by Messrs H. Willis and P. L. Hutchinson, members of the executive, visited Mr J. A. Frostick at his house on Saturday afternoon, and expressed to him their appreciation of Mr Frostick's work on behalf of ,the Association, and * particularly in the matter of the acquisition of the Canterbury Hall. They also deplored the references ■ made recently in the House of Representatives concerning Mr Frogtick and the Kaiapoi Woollen Company.
