The use of hydrogen gas instead of helium caused an explosion resulting in the destruction of Japan's biggest and latest navy dirigible, No. 3. during manoeuvres. There was only one casualty out of a crew of seven aboard. When the explosion occurred, the airship was almost stationary facing a, gale with the engines going at full speed. A spark ignited the hydrogen.
