LINCOLN COLLEGE SPORTS. The Canterbury Agricultural College grounds at Lincoln are always beautiful in the spring-time and they were at their best on Saturday afternoon, when the annual sports were held. The day was ideal for outdoor sports, for, although the sky was overcast, the weather was warm, with a slight breeze. Great crowds of interested spectators enjoyed the day's sport, and a number took advantage of the opportunity to inspect the fine college buildings and grounds. i Afternoon tea. was served in a large marquee erected on the lawn in front of the college,' . and the tables were gaily decorated with spring blossoms. ST. ALBANS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The annual sale of work in connexion with the St. Albans Presbyterian Church was opened by Mr J..W. Beahland. CAMBRIAN SOCIETY'S FAIR.
The Cliristchurch Cambrian Society contemplates building a hall and it was for this purpose that it organised a fair •which proved highly successful, '« the Jellicoe Hall on Saturday. Mrs. Hugh Williams was a capable secretary, and the various stallg were well patronised throughout the afternoon and evening. Short musical programmes were given at both sessions. BALL AT GREYMOyTH. (special to the sbbss.) GEEYMOUTH, October 22. Success crowned the efforts of all concerned in the organising work/in connexion with the Greymouth Trottinf Club's ball, which was held last, evening to mark the occasion of tho reopening of the members' stand, which was destroyed by fire about eighteen months ago. For over a week, an energetic committee of lady supporters of tho club had been making elaborate preparations to make tho ball the social event of the year. The spacious dining-room,-re-cently re-built, which accommodated the dancers, had been tastefully decorated with native greenery and shrubs. The finishing touch to the beautiful setting of West Coast shrubs was given by myriads of gay streamers, in the various colours of the owners of the chief performers competing at the Meeting, and the effect was enhanced by the brilliant electric lighting.' Supper was served in the big room upstairs, the decorations of which gave the surroundings a pretty sylvan effect which reflected great credit on the artistic tastes of the enthusiast tic ladies responsible for the. transformation; For those who did not participate in dancing there were plenty of other amusements, including cards and games, while cosy corners ,and ice-cream parlours were to be found behind arches of bush foliage in various parts of the - buliding. The members stand escaped the invasion of the flood waters . and the floor of. the ; dancing-room, which was occupied by over hundred couples, was in perfect order. 'ln the cardroom were twenty-four tables, which were patronised to full capacity, the attendance at the function totalling "nver. five hundred. Music was supplied by Everybody's Orchestra. MASONIC BALL AT MOUNT SOMERS. j i _____. The annual Masonic ball of Lodge Erewhon, held, in the Mount Somers Memorial Hall, on Wednesday, again proved one of -the season's moat popular evenla. The happy, manner in which Lodge members cooperated in providing for the comfort and enjoyment of their guests did much to make the ball such an outstanding success. Streamers, in the Lodge .colours (sky blue and white), suspended from circles between the main electric lights and radiating to the walls,' formed, the chief feature of the ballroom decorations. Adorning : the orchestral stago brackets of .streamers overhung large bowls of ferns and evergreens. Wor. Bro. L. AfoFarlane extended a warm welcome to the guests. Music was supplied by Daboum'a Orchestra (Ashburton), extras being provided by visiting guests. 8r0..F. W. Gifkins made an efficient M.C. . About 60 couples took part in the grand march, led off by Won Bros. L. McFarlane, S. Hood, and Mesdames McFarlane and Hood. The catering and supervision were in the. care of .Mrs FY W. Potter, sister of the bride The officiating minister was the Kev. J. D. Webster. The bride wore a becoming frock. <?t cream georgette over blush pink crepe de chine, while distinction added to the gown bv a yoke and hem ot scalloped lace. Her embroideredrT®" fell from a coronet of lace arid orange blossom, and she wore' a string or pearls,' the gift of the liridegroom. Her bouquet was of pale pink and .white' freezias, tulips and lily'of the valley; The attendant bridesmaid was Miss Doris Potter, niece of the bride. Her, attractive frock of apple .green; georgette was ruched at the shoulders vand waist and trimmed with a large pink posy. at the shoulder. She wore; a becoming white silk straw hat trimmed with ribbon, to match her frock, -and, she carried a bouquet of pale pmk,and white flowers, v Mr Gordon Streete, cousin of the bridegroom, acted as best man. After the ceremony, Mr and Mrs Prebble entertained a large gathering of relatives and friends at a pleasant reception in St. Ninian's Church sohbol room. The hostess wore asmart-black silk marocain dress, brocaded, silk coat, and,black:satin hat.- She -also wore a black fox fnr. Mrs Morse, the bridegroom's mother, wore a beautiful grey silk marocain gown with hat and fur to match. The usual toasts were honoured, interspersed with a; recitation by Miss A. Prebble, a pianoforte solo by Miss Alison Stephens, and songs by Mr Leonard Prebble. The. bride's travelling su£b was # of powder blue marocainwith; a rose beijte front and knife pleated skirt front. She wore a blue silk straw hat trimmed with velvet ribbon and flowers to tone with the dress and she carried a navy blue tailored coat and golden fox fur.
PARTY AT REDCLIFFS. A most enjoyable progressive 600 evening was held on Thursday evening at the residence of" Mr and Mrs' J>. Coleman, Redcliffs in aid of the cake stall at the forthcoming Bowling and Croquet Club's fete. The prizes were won by Mrs J. S. Hines and Mr F. Wing, Mrs Edmonds ■ and Mr A; F. Graham.
