CARTER THE GREAT.

At two performances on Saturday the crowds who went to sop some of the marvels of modern magio as manifested through Carter the Great were thoroughly mystified. The magician amuses as woll as mystifies, for his quaint humour is very unlike . mystery. His tricks wero carried out in a manner which enabled the spectators to see, or to think that they saw, everything that was going on, which, of course, added to the mystery. ,i Tho item with which the magician finished his programme was perhaps the most striking of a wonderful assortment. It was entitled the "Disappearing Flapper." One moment tho was there in mid-air, suspended by a rope. Then a pistol flashed, and she was gone. The trick defies explanation. Miss Evelyn Maxwell was an assistant of whom any magician might be proud. At his instigation sho undortook to answer any question that any member of tho audience might care to commit to paper. She did not actually see the writing, which was carefully retained by the authors, but in each case the answer was correct, and the end of the act metj with a great round of applause. There will be a matinee as well as an evening performance to-day.
