BOWLING.
MANNING CUP. PENNANT COMPETITION. Saturday .saw the'opening '.play j n , he Christchurch Bowling Centre's inter-club pennant competition, for which 56 teams of three rinks each have entered. The Weather was fine, with a nor'-west wind, and the greens Mere in good order. ■ "Tlb bowling was not as fe. as may be expected later in the season, but close contests resulted on several of the greens. In the- game between (Pinnegan) Canterbury and (Ainger) Christchurch on the Canterbury green, tho scores were ai all after the-20th head, and a measure was necessary on the last. ' It- was an interesting contest throughout, Finnegan scorin~ eight ou the Urd head, and having what aupeared to be a decisive lead, 15-1, on the 6th. The detailed results were as follows: Section A. dignitv of the profession service to thb nation;, and; to the LmPi Kyo-i refer to the "Daily Telegraph's" reports of the addresses delivered at the 1927 London summer school, you will, find that the Right Hon Dr. Fisher. Lord Eustace Percy, the 'Tit. Hon. Mr Amory, and many other notable men have committed the heinous sin of entertaining for the London school, those . grandiose and nebulous ideals which in the case ot the New Zealand venture evoke your petulant comment. Your pronouncement, which will doubtless reverberate to the confines of.the Empire.- should ■clarify their befogged mentalities, and help the teaching profession generally on to your plane of pellucid vision If ybu doubt whether our school can realise its ideals.iyou might condescend to refer to the tributes, paid to the 1927 school bv his Excellency, and also by the Director of Education and the president of the Auckland University Council. ',,-•.■, No one claims that the school per s.e provides a liberal educational outfit. All we sav is that it gives an inspiring introduction to cultural studies and kindles a desire for further study and for personal intellectual enrichment. Mr Fisher is guilty of stating that the summer school at Home opens new vistas, gives fruitful interpretations ot old themes, and inspires teachers to explore wider fields of learning. And all within ten days! What grandiloquent flapdoodlism! How shocking to the batrachian mind! # • * How exasperatingly vague, too is to the superior journalistic mind the effort of the same educational neophyte to define the ideals of the English summer school. "It is designed to provide mental and spiritual refreshment, nnd above all to stimulate to fresh and fruitful endeavour. .At it teachers will, renew the fires of enthusiasm bv contact with enthusiasts." What Slielleyan pvrotechnics! What gauche hysterics! How deplorable this nebulous idealism to the smugly balanced intellect!— Yo " rS ' etC - T. M.ILNER. Waitaki, October 20th. [ln the- presence" of—what, if they were not his own, our correspondent would perhaps call—th_ese platitudinous ponderosities, polysyllabic profundities, and magniloquent enumerations of illustrious identities, we almost shrink from mentioning that our only offence, was our saying it was hard to find out from Mr Milner's article in the "Summer School Journal" how the summer school would help the teacher.-Ed.
