SUMNER ITEMS.
Sports Association. Mr G. F. Allen presided over the annual meeting of the Sumner United Sports Association. The annual report and balance-sheet showed that the inter-borough contests were increased in number and were very popular. Last season New Brighton had won by 6-4, but this year Sumner had won 6-1. The matter of an inter-borough athletic fixture was meeting with approval, and it was hoped to hold a contest in the autumn. The association was arranging for a recep tiou to W. E. Merritt. There was a credit balance of £6 Is 7d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The electfon of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson; president, Mr G. F. Allen" vice-presidents, Messrs T. Newburgh H J. Williams, W. S. Mitchell, and J.' d! Edmonds; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. L. Allen; assistant secretary, Mr R H. Neville; executive committee, Messrs G. F. Allen, R. H. Seville, and C. L. Allen. Mr Dick said it was hoped to include a "Soccer" match in the competitions next year. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs R. 11. Neville, P. Dick, and C. L. A lieu was appointed to draw up proposals for the athletic meeting. It was agreed to arrange with the New Brighton Association for a meeting to discuss next year's competitions and the autumn athletic meeting. Mr T. Merry was added to the committee. It was recommended that the presentation of the shield be made at the close of the athletic meeting. On the motion of Mr Dick, seconded by Mr S, Williams, it was decided to bring under the notice of the Borough Council the great need for dressing accommodation. It was decided to write to the secretaries of the sports clubs asking them to endeavour to contribute Is per member for the purpose of suitably recognising the performance of W. E. Merritt in the New Zealand cricket team. Messrs P. Dick and H. Wilson were appointed to secure'donations from other residents.
Men's Rifle Club. . The members of the Sumnor-Redcliffs Miniature Rifle Club closed their season .recently after a very successful year. Before presenting the prizes the president said the club had gained prizes at the Ashburton and Canterbury . championships, and that Mr Edmonds had won the Goodhart Cup. | Presbyterian Church. ! The Rev. W. McAra presided over a full attendance of the committee of the Sumner-Eedcliffs Presbyterian Church. A letter was received from the Sumner Beautifying Society thanking the church for its donation of £8 for providing relief for residents of the borough who were of employment. -In yiew. ;5 t>f the coming into operation of..the Summer Time Act-it'was-agreed that the services continue to be held at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The treasurer reported a credit balance in all accounts.
The chairman reported that the anniversary services would be held on Assembly Sunday, and that arrangements had been made for the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson (First Church, Invcrcargill) to take the morning service. The Moderator of the Assembly, the Rev. J. Aitken, of Gisborne, would speak in the afternoon 1 , and the evening service would be taken by Dr. Gibb. It was reported that the erection of the Church Hall at Redcliffs had been commenced, and it was expected +'• t it would be completed about the end of November. It was agreed to arrange for a dedication panel that would beunveiled by the Rev. "\y. McAra on opening day. The question f the erection of a Sunday School Hall at Sumner was discussed, and it was unanimously resolved to proceed with the erection, in concrete, of a hall 40ft x 24ft with two classrooms 14ft x 12ft at the back, at a cost of £SOO. . A building committee consisting of "essrs J. Hampton, Chisholm, J. A. Russell, G. A. Alexander, and J. E. Tait was set up"; and it was agreed to raise a loan of £4OO either from the Fire Insurance Committee or locally. It was agreed to make fresh arrangements .for cleaning the e' irches at Sumner and Redcliffs, and Mrs Topping was heartily tbankpd for the'services sh ;:■" : rendered in this direction over a period of more than twelve years. It was agreed to hold a social evening on Monday, November 28th, for the purpose of celebrating the eightieth birthday of the Rev. W. McAra aud the jubilee of his ordination as a Minister. Beautifying Association. During the last week or two an important piece of work has been taken in hand near the Clifton tram stop, Sumner. As a result, a very cosy and picturesque shelter has been finished, so that passengers waiting for trams may do so without being exposed to the wind. The scheme took advantage of a natural cave facing the north-east. The floor has been terraced, and the approach flanked with pretty terraced gardens. Proposed Loans. There is much speculation as to whether a poll witf" be taken for the proposed loans. Mr W. V. Siddall, the Town Clerk, interviewed by a representative of The Press, said if the loans were approved in Wellington a poll would have to be taken. Personal. Mr and Mrs Fane Cox, who were visiting Mr and Mrs E. A. Johnson, have gone to Greyinouth. The Rev. W. McAra has left for Jvaikoura, where he.will preach at the jubilee celebrations of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs J. D. Lawrence, sen., and Mr J. D., Lawrence, jun., are motoring in Nelson and Westland.
