NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Croquet. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent by members and friends of the local Croquet Club, tbe occasion being the official opening of the green for the season. The Mayor (Mr A. \Y. Owles) declared the greens opened, and ex. tended a cordial welcome to the visitors, after which the Mayoress played the first ball. Mr A. Koss, president of the Croquet Association, responding on behalf of the visitors, congratulated the committee and the members as a whole on the progress the club had made. Afternoon tea was dispensed, followed by a game of golf croquet, Mrs Maddren and Mrs Smith (United) being the winners. Soccer. The second annual social, dance, and euchre tourney of the Xew Brighton Association Football Club were held in Joyland, which had been verv tastefully decorated in gold and black, relieved with greenery. There was a large attendance. The music was provided by Mr E. Jones's orchestra. Dur. ing the evening Mr W. E. Leadley, on behalf of the members, accepted a cup presented by Mr K. English, president of the Canterbury Football Association, for the sixth grade team, who won the six-a-side tournament, while each player also received a medal. The Monte Carlo and lucky-spot dances were won respectively by Miss Gertrickcs and Mr Law, and Misses Burrows and Wylie. In the card tourney the prize was won by Mr H. Pankhurst, Mrs Pitcher, Mrs E. Lancaster, Mr I?. Stapleton, and Mr G. Magstonc. Bowling. The club fixtures for this afternoon are as follows: Section C, v. United, on local green—Chapman, Spedding, Hooker, Muirson, Samuels, Owles, It. Bishop, E. Stokes, Kershaw, Smith, Whiteley, and Barrett. / Section G, v. Shirley, at Shirley— L. Laurence, Cooke, Munns, G. Laurence, Cooper, Pocock. Dean, Marriott, Beardslcy, Leadley, G. W. Bishop,: and Shaw.

Sacred Cantata. At • tho Presbyterian Church, St. George's Choir, Linwood, gave the sacred cantata, "Ruth," under the conductorship of Mr Harvey-Turvey. The parts were taken by Miss Caithness (Naomi), Miss Vernazoni (Ruth), Miss Dykes (Orpah), and P. A. Caithness (Boaz)': Preliminary to the cantata vocal solos were given by. Miss C. Wilson and Mr H. Francis, a duet by Miss M..and Mr C. Searell, pianoforte solos by Miss M. Macintosh, flute solos by Mr W. Harvey-Turvey, and an elocutionary item by Miss E. Paton. Miss M. Macintosh presided at the piano throughout. The visiting choir were afterwards entertained at supper by the local choir and Ladies' Guild. Cricket. Fourth grade players play one-day matches, and the team will also play West District High School on Saturday next, 29th, at Brighton No. 3. Beresford Club. The Mayor is officially opening tho fancy fair and sale of work being held in Joyland in aid of the funds.of the Beresford Club.' Personal.

Miss Essie Owles, who recently .underwent an operation for appendicitis, is now well on the road towards recovery.

Miss D. M. P. Hopkins, who has been spending the past month with her parents, returned to Auckland on Thursday.
