RUGBY.. TEAM FOR SOUTH AFRICA. EMERGENCIES SELECTED. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, October 20. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union last night, the chairman of the Selection Committee (Mr E. Mc-; Kenzio) reported that the selectors had nominated players to fill any. vacancies that may occur in the team for South Africa. The emergencies were announced as follows: Backs. L. HEAZELWOOD (Otago). S. R. CARLETON (Canterbury). L. STRINGFELLOW (Wairarapa). F. SNODGRASS (Nelson). E. B. STEWART (Otago). A. HOLDEN (Otago). Forwards. C. G. PORTER (Wellington). COULSTON (Wanganui). G. CONRAD (Hawke's Bay). A. KNIGHT (Auckland). H. B. GODFREY (Canterbury). A. PREITAS (West Coast). A. MARSLIN (Otago). R. M. BIRD (Southland). The Unions are being asked to forward nominations for the position of manager of the team by November 30th, as the Management Committee proposes to make the appointment early in December. The selection of captain and vice-cap-tain will be deferred until after the medical examination of the selected players takes place. Mr Dean stated that he was proceeding shortly to Honolulu on a health trip, and Mr Kitto was appointed vicechairman. MERIYALE CLUB. The Merivale Football Club's annual social and dance were held at the Caledonian Hill last night, when the trophies for the season were presented by the chairman of tho Rugby Union, Mr A. E. McPhall, and Mr F. T. Evans, president of the club. The trophies presented were the Redpath Shield, for most points in grades under 18, 19, and 20 years, the second grade trophies under 19 and under 17, and the seven-a-side medals to the under 20, and under 17 teams. N. Doreen was presented with a photograph of the Canterbury representative team which won the. Ranfurly Shield. RUGBY LEAGUE. The Canterbury Rugby League's annual presentation of trophies won during the season took place at Jellicoe Hall last night, the gathering taking the form of a social and dance. Tho president of the League, Dr. H. T. J. Thacker, presented the trophies and congratulated the club's on their prowess during the year. The McKeon Cup for the Canterbury champion team, and the Gore Cup, for interprovincial play, both went to the Hornby Club, the Thacker Shield going to Marist for the club's success in the knock-out competition. The seven-a-side medals were presented to Waimairi, winner* of the junior grade, Marist for the third grade, and Sydenham for the fourth grade competition.
