GOVERNMENT NOMINEES

WELLINGTON, January 21

• The appointment of the four Government nominees on the Council of the University of New Zealand, how in progress of reconstitution in terms of last season's amending Act, was announced by the Minister for Education (Hon. Mr Wright) to-day. The appointees, whose names follow, will hold oflice for a terin of three years. They, are:— > , _ Thomas Ueid Fleming, M.A., L-L.U. Hon. Josiah Alfred Hanan, M.L.C.

Thomas Hugh Macky. William Barr Montgomery, C.8..&. j( -t'With the exception of Mr Hanau, said the Minister, "all the other representatives are new men as far as the University is concerned. It will be found, however, that .they are exceedingly" capable, and will, I believe, do excellent work in the Council. Mr Fleming has been closely identified with education in New Zealand for a great number «of years. He not only understands the academic side, but he also has a business knowledge which will prove.or great assistance to the Council. The Hon. Mr Hanan has been on the University Senate for a number of years and has done excellent work in the past, and can be relied upon . also to do excellent work in the future. He has the knowledge and is generally, well equipped for the position. Mr Macky. one of the principals of the firm of Macky, Logan. Caldwell, Ltd.. is well-known in Auckland, and, indeed, throughout New Zealand. He is a young 'nan full of vitality and energy, and is.one of the lending business men in. the Dominion. His advice, particularly upon the business side of the university work, will prove invaluable. Mr Montgomery, formerly Collector of Customs proved himself one of the most valuable civil servants in the employ of the Government. ..Although new to the work, ho is such a painstaking 'industrious'man that he will soon get a grip of the university work and carry out his duties with crnr'i't. to himself -fnd to the'country.
