TEMUKA.

PERSONAL. Miss Stella Goodman leaves Temuka to-day on a fortnight's holiday in Dunedin. Messrs Edwards, MeCallurn, and Chapman, who have been attending the Dominion Bowling tournament at Auckland, returned to Temuka yesterday. Miss Mona Evans, who has been on holiday in the North Island, has returned to Temuka. Mrs and Miss Reeves (Golden Bay) who have been the guests of Mrs H. B. Strange (Temuka) left for home on Wednesday. Mrs R. Kempthorne (Sydney) and Miss M. Williams (Wellington), who have bien the guests of Mrs H. B. Strange, left Temuka yesterday, The Rev J. Harris and the Rev. H. Patchett, of Christchurch, have spent a week fishing around Temuka and Timaru. The Rev. J. Harris (Christchurch) has been the guest of Mr and Mrs D. Bryan (Gammack street). Mr and Mrs Shand left Temuka on Thursday, on a holiday in the north. The Rev. Father Bartley returned to ' muka on Thursday. The Rev. Father P. Scanlan (St. Bede's, Christchurch) is at present at Temuka. The Rev. Father Bell has gone to Wellington. The Rev. Father Fraher has gone to Wellington. Mrs and Miss Drum (Dunedin) arrived in Temuka yesterday, and are the guests of Mrs Gaffaney (Belpher, Temuka). 7' Rita Twomey, accompanied by Miss Byrne (Timaru) have gone to Tek po for the week-end. Miss Peggy Barrow and Miss Slattery have gone to the West Coast. Miss McArthur (Davey street, Temuka) has returned home after spending a holiday in the south. Mrs Burdon is on holiday in the south. Mr and Mrs G. H. Clements and family are on holiday at the Milford Lagoon. Mrs A. H. Clemens is visiting her mother, Mrs F. Beri, Temuka. Mr J. D. Hunter has been appointed supervisor, for the forthcoming B grade band contest at Temuka.

Danco at Milford. A successful dance was held in the Milford Hall on Thursday evening, the proceeds being devoted to —"da <-he carnival, which is to be held in April. The hall was packed for th occasion visito coming from Timaru, Fairlie, Geraldine, and Methven, and the hall was decorated with green and yellow ribbons and banners. The floor was in good order. Music was supplied by Mr C. Kellard (Orton) and extras. by Messrs J. Horgan, A. Davies (Clandeboye), and Angus Brown. Supper was dispensed by the ladies' committee and Mr W. Seeler was M.O. During the evening, Mr A. Bain expressed the >mmittee's thanks for the company's liberal patronage. Business 'Men's Association. A meeting of the executive of the Business Men's Association was held yesterday morning. Present: Messrs T. Knight (president), H. B. Strange, W. F. Evans, A, D. Cameron, G. H. Clements, A. E. Smith, J. Davis, and the secretary, Mr B. Hughes. Mr F. H. McKeown, stationmaster, waited on,the executive in reference to the Association's request that the reserving of seats between Temuka and Christchurch be allowed, and notified the executive that the Department declined such requests, except in certain special circumstances. Mr Evans stated that numbers of seats were reserved from Dunedin to Timaru and became vacant, and as Temuka was only a few miles under the 100 miles limit, there was sufficient to warrant their request being granted. The secretary was instructed to write again to the , Department pointing out that it would be a big convenience to the Temuka travellers, and advantageous to the Department. The. president notified members that he w uld give a special prize of a conducts 's baton to the conductor of the band winning the aggregate of the two tests at the forthcoming band contest. It wr decided to make an application to the South Island Bands' Associati i for any shields available for the contest. The executive was appointed the Publicity and Finance Committee, and it was decided to appoint a member of the executive chairman of each of the various committees with power to appoint the committee with the approval of the executive. The following appointments were made: Canvassing, Mr J. Davis; accommodation, Mr W. F. Evans; illumination, Mr H. B. Strange; and grounds, Mr G. H. Clements. Mr W. D. Sutcliffe was appointed treasurer and it was decided to open a contest account with the Bank of Australasia. It was unanimously decided that, in the ovent of a surplus from the contest 6-ich proceeds would be devjted to improvements of the Bbrough generally. A lettei was received from the District High School Committee asking the Business Men's Association to request business people of Temuka to close

their premises for the school picnic on February 17th. The application was granted. .

Fake Pretences. At the Magistrate's Court before Messrs W. F. Evans, and J. B. Sinclair, J.P.'s, Patrick James McCarthy, alii!- Patrick Michael Casey, was charged with vagrancy under the Police Offences Act, 1908, and with having obtained by false representations the sum ox £2, from E. Blackmore, Temuka. Accused, who was arrested on the Temuka railway station, pleaded guilty to both charges. Sergeant Dwan stated accused had attempted to obtain money' from various 'jusiness men in Temuka, and that he had received a message from Timam in respect to the accused. Therefore he would ask for a remand. Accused was remanded accordingly to appear at the Court this morning at 10 o'clock. Bowling. Ideal conditions prevailed on Thursday afternoon, when a champion rink match was played on the Temuka green between Temuka and Timaru. At the interval for afternoon tea, Temuka was leading by three points, and in the latter stages of the game the local players drew ahead, each rink winning on the last head. The Temrka Club has won »acb of the four games, thus winning the section outright. Totals: Temuka 3 wins (91 points); Timaru 1 win (75 points).
