THOROUGHBRED YEARLINGS.
SUCCESSFUL SALE AT TRENTHAM.
MANY BUYERS AND GOOD PRICES (SFECUL 10 THB tSXBS.) WELLINGTON, January 21. A new era in the sport of racing in New Zealand dawned at Trentham to-day, when the inauguration of the New Zealand yearling sales took place. The setting was right for an event of this description, and every part of the Dominion wa a represented by one or more buyers, while Australia sent several men who operated freely. The sale was conducted in the birdcage of the Wellington Club' 3 course. The condition of the stock was a credit to their breeders, and it might safely bs stated that never before have bo many well-bred and good-looking yearlings been offered at one sale. Prices generally were satisfactory, though buyers secured several obvious bargains. Top price was realised by a spanking bay colt by Absurd from the well-known mare Bronze, 1025 guineas being offered before he fell to the bid of J. M. Buchanan, the Auckland trainer, acting for one of his patrons. At 1000 guineas Messrs J. C. and P. S. Gleeson, of Auckland, secured a brown gelding by Solferino from Ro ß e Rtd, and though the price was a good one, the gelding looked well worth the money. The first [.art of the sale was conducted byTVue, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs Wil iiarn Inglis and Co., of Melbourne, and Mr Reg. Inglis created an excellent impression as a salesman. Later Mr Ken Austin, of Sydney, representing Chiabolrn and Co., acting in conjunction with Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., wielded the hammer, and he encouraged good business throughout. At times bids were hard to get, but often the bidding was spirited, and at times quite exciting. Pyne, Gould, Gumness, Ltd., secured particularly good prices, the lots offered on account of Mr J. F. Reid averaging 368 guineas, while Mr I. G. Duncan's yearlings brought an average of 350 guineas. The average for all offered by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., was 275 guineas, a very satisfactory state of affairs. Following arc details:—
