TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the Taranaki Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close on Monday. Red Wink's display at Ashburtou on Saturday last was very disappointing to his connexions and served to show that the chances of the gelding ever regaining any of of his past speed are of a remote order. It has now been decided not to persevere further with him, and he is to bo relegated to the paddock. The (victory registered by Rapier in the Wellington Cup was well received at Riocarton, where his chances wore well fancied by those who have followed his track work since the New Zealand Cup Meeting. His trainer, H. fturse, has always Sad a high opinion of the horse and predicted that ho would be one of the best handicap performers in the Dominion if produced at his beet. His owner and breeder, Mr G. G. Holmes, has also shared that opinion and has refused on several occasions to discuss selling him. As a youngßter Rapier was not very robust, and it was on this account that he was not gelded. His dam, Anitea, has been again mated with Greyspear this season.
The success of Booster in the Tele-
§raph Handicap at Trentham on Thursay was the most important registered by the Riccarton trained gelding and Sncidentally by his mentor, J. W. Jenmings, whose energies up to recently have been confined mostly to the West Coast. Booster has given indications on the racing path and on the track that he commands a rare hurst of
speed, and would probably have figured Joftener on the prize-list if ho 1 had been fajvoured with better fortune in the running of many
of his races.' He was responsible for some of the fastest work seen iat Riccarton daring the past month, and the state of the Trentham track •would be to his liking. There were altogether too many entries at the sale in Wellington yesterday, and though starting at 10.30 a.m. it was evening before the last of the lots were disposed of. Naturally the end of the sale found the bidding very slack, and buyers were hard to find. It seems with this excellent experience gained at this sale that the auctioneers will make it a sale solely confined to yearlings, and horses of other ages will t>e sold at some other time. If tho successful inauguration did anything it showed that an annual yearling sale was badly needed. Buyers from Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Tarasaki, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, ~ Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago, and . Southland wero operating at the Trentham sale yesterday, and at times there was the keenest excitement in the bidding.' The shouting of some buyers anxious to secure a lot was in striking contrast to others, who merely nodded or held tro a hand to signify a contract made of hundreds of pounds.
On* of the best yearlings offered ab the yearling sales at Trentham yesterday was the bay obit by Martian from Kildee. the latter a beautifully bred mart by Kilbroney from Grey Linnet. 'Be was offered on behalf of the Masterton sportsman, Mr A. McDonald, and although the colt went to 900 guineas, this was not sufficient to ensure business. This is the only Martian yearling in New Zealand, and he shows all the characteristics of this well-known
sire's stock. He is> certainly a fine type of l animal, and "was generally ex- \ peoted to top the thousand guineas mark.
The weather in Wellington has been delightful for several days past and gives erery promise of being fine for to-day's racing. The track will again be in great condition, and fast times may be expected. . In the Mungaroa High Weight Handicap there should be a good field, and the manner in which Mint Leaf finished on the opening day suggests that he iwill be hard to beat. orer an extra quarter mile. He has to carry a few (pounds more than he did on Thursday, but the distance should be all in his favour, especially as he will again have ;ths services of L. 6. Morris. Wedding March will probably be the hardest [Mint Leaf has to beat.
Assurance finished a rattling good *eOond U> Stormy on the first day and rig certain to have many admirers for the Trial Plate. He is not a good •Degihner but he runs an when most >Jof the others are stopping. Dimmer is ; an Aucklander with a reputation and ' may run well. . Pmthair is engaged in both the 'January Handicap and the W.K.O. Handicap, and if raced in the former iwill take all sorts of beating. The race he had on Thursday should hare done Ctontrepieoe a world of good, and he " may be expected to run more prominently.
Otairi went a fairly good race in the Ora«herbert Handicap on Thursday, and on that running must be prominent to the Nursery Handicap, but Thaw and IPaleta are a pair of smart two-year-olds.
The two Canterbury horses, Fresco and Footfall,, look to havo a royal chance of being returned winners in the W.K.C. Handicap, and there is anotoer representative in Front Rank who may take some boating. Stormy has 9.9 in the Douro Cup, jSJf "x ?&$ ? ne and this we «}6uld not trouble him seriously especiwl? aa he will have the services of *n experienced horseman and will be 22*J£Mr hand '# than he was on • «ort #$ ity - K is a likely sort, and Sosenor should be improved hy Ms race on the opening day. r*P er ? has6 > C 0 "1 Money. th \ bcsfc of thc *> engag*! m the Metropolitan Handicap of B^te?L, and *?*• Camp HtodS" !w *£££* **m<A- Dark *Tj>.i ,ho ? ,d ™* Ktt« than fee did on the opening day.
The six-year-old gelding Carpentier, by Sunny Lake—Grand Rain, dropped dead on the road at West Melton on Wednesday when his owner, Mr P. F. Campbell, of Christehurch, was bringing him to Riccarton after a holiday in the paddock. After four wins in succession, counting a dead-heat, Lysander has had to be content with minor berths in his last two outings—the Great Northern Derby and Wellington Stakes. His winnings this season total £3137 10s, while those of Commendation, who can be regarded as the season's best three-year-old, are £4657 10s. Last season the Desmond horse Limond, the property of the Koatanui studmaster, Mr G. M. Cxirrie, was eleventh on the list of winning stallions with £7075 to his credit. When the current year closes he should be higher up on the list, for up to the close of the holiday racing his progeny had credited him with £8452 10s. "When bookmakers carry on operations openly, it is a little harsh that a man like this should be charged," commented Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Dunedin Folice Court, when ordering James St. Clair Oughton to come up for sentence when called upon on a charge of bookmaking at Wingatui, on December 27th. Mr B. S. Irwin, for accused, stated that he ran a small double among hi 3 friends and no more. He was a married man in permanent employment at Invercargill. Our special correspondent telegraphed from Hastings last night:—The weather is ideal and the prospects for the Hawke's Bay Trotting Club's Annua! Meetine; to-morrow are most encouraging. The course, which is in first-class order, presented a very husy appearance to-day, when some interesting work was accomplished. The chief race on the programme, the Hawke's Bar Cup, has drawn a useful field of ten, representing eight owners. Mr J. H. Lloyd has two candidates, Karma and The Shrew, and Mr R. Vautier holds a double string to his bow with Blue Glen and Van Rich. The final issue is open, but a trio likely to find favour with the puhlic nre Holly Bell, Trampfast, and The Shrew. In the minor events Peter , Grattan, Commander Bir"*en, Tui Bells. Loch Mnigh. Black B.illin, Marv Audubon, and Bicolour have possibilities. Opa, who won the Foxton Cup yesterday, was a consistent performer last season, and credited his owner with £1415. This year, however, he has started twelve times and been_ only twice in the money, a third prior to his win yesterday being his only other contribution to his keep. i Bonhomme, who proved a disappointment when carrying Mr T. A. Duncan's colours early this racing year, has been the reverse'for Mr H. Stanbridge, and has earned for him £660. made up of four winning brackets and a second place. First Acre, who prevailed in the Anniversary Handicap at Foxton yesterday, has been freely raced this season, having started on twenty-one occasions. He has been in the money eleven times, and added-£927 to his owner's bank account.
Ardath, the aged chestnut gelding by Hallowmas, out of Rau Rau, who won the Hurdles Handicap at Foxton yesterday, was making his first appearance this season. So little was thought of his prospects that he was the extreme outsider in a field of eleven, and naid a nice price. Last year he started on five occasions without earning a penny of his oats bill.
