j AMERICAN PHENOMENON. (BT CABLE—rBESS . ASSOCIATION"—COFYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIA* AND Jf.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) NEW YORK; January 19. Hucnavista Lake, comprising 10 square miles in the- Kera country, was drained and transformed into a vast wheatfield. Reapers, a year ago reported that a tremendous number ot house mice had invaded the field. Late autumn found the surrounding grassland alive with them. When thousands of sheep were turned on this the mice moved towards higher ground. Hordes invaded wheathelds and nearby towns. ,The highways were car-peted-with the pests,, which swarmed into homes and barns, destroying foodstuffs, clothing, and crops. Dr. Raymond Hall, ot the University of California, zoologist, declared that the scourge was unbelievable. Farmers, trying to save their crops, were ploughing around the fields furrows filled with poisonous grain, but despite this the mice forged ahead.
