ATHLETICS.
CANTERBURY CENTRE. VISIT OF R. W. LAMB. Included in the business dealt with last evening by tho 1 executive of the Canterbury Centre of tho N.Z. Amateur Athletic Associutipn were the arrangements for sending the Canterbury town to the New Zealand championships, and the visit of K. W. Lamb, tho Australian cyclist. Those present were: Messrs \V. C. Flewellyn (presidont), R. Beattio, C. 8. McCully, E, H. Cross, S. H. Truman, E. Blancbard, S. C. Forrester, L. Smith, J. K. Moloney, H. K Weston, and G. G. Lockwood (secretary). Mr Cross reported that, with tho exception of Hnlswell, the entries for the athletic meetings held during tho holidays were satisfactory. It was resolved to congratulate tho Atnberley Club on the conduct of its meeting. G. Duggan, who had been reinstated as an amateur, wrote applyiug for a remission of his suspension. It was decided to adhere to tho previous decision. , ... An invitation to tho annual sports of fc>t. Joseph's Home Sports Association, Middleton, on the 22nd inat., was received. Mr A. W. Dunkley applied, on behalf of the Now Brighton Gala Committee, for permission to hold a 100 yd open handicap. The president stated he had granted permission, but no entries bad been received. Mr McCormiek wrote on behalf of the Monica Sports Association, advising that its programme had been altered, and it was now proposed to run the following amateur events: 440 yds, 880 yds, and 100 yds handicaps, and one mile and half mile cycle handicaps. Permission was granted for all ovents except the 100 yds, and it was decided to arrange officials. Canterbury Championships. It was decided to hold the trials for the New Zealand cycling championships at Lancaster Park on Wednesday evening. Mr Truman reported that tho result of a campaign for funds to send a team to the New Zealand championships was approximately £IOO. Some of the clubs had not paid in their quota. The secretary said this would suffice for eight men. Selectors appointed for the provincial team were Messrs Cross, Beattie, Weston, and C. H. Taylor, jun. Iti was agreed to send two cyclists, and to ask the Auckland Centre to increase the size of it« track to no more than four laps to the mile. In reply to a question.tho chairman said no pacemakers would be allowed in the Canterbury cycling championships. Correspondence regarding the tour of K. W. Lamb, toe Australian cyclist, was received from the Wellington and Otago centres. A draft programme, which provided for three events jn which Lamb could ride, was submitted for the evening of February 16th, and approved. The sum of £2O was allotted for advertising. It waß decided to endeavour to induce members of the Otago Centre's team for the New Zealand championships to compete. The executive discussed the sending of an invitation to R. A. Rose to compote, but tho chairman disapproved of this suggestion, on the ground that the cost would be too great. No action was taken. The Canterbury Athletic Club applied for permission to hold a meeting at English Park on the evening of February 21st. Tho Centre's permission lor the club to issue an invitation to Lamb to appear was also asked for, and a .'draft programme was enclosed in the let- | ter. The executive granted the requests. The Wellington Centre wrote asking whether the Centre could arrange for some of its competitors at the New Zealand championships to compete at a meeting on the Monday evening following the championships. It was decided to leave the decision to the athletes. Wanganui Centre wrote making a similar request, the letter stating that the inclusion of Canterbury cyclists would prove a great draw and assist tho Centre against the professional element. The secretary of tho Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club wrote submitting February 36th as the date of the country clubs' championship meeting, and forwarding the proposed programme. The date was confirmed, and the programme approved. It was decided to endeavour to obtain a shield for inter-club competition at the meeting. Mr Truman drew attention to the unfair practice of athletes at Lancaster Park on Wednesday evening of running inside the chalk line in the distance events. The secretary complained that the evening meetings were badly run, and little assistonce was received from the club's officials. Tho programrao for the inter-club challenge meeting at Ensor'a road on February sth was approved. The draw was as follows: ' Vanity v, Canterbury, Technical Old Boys v. Old Boys, Y.M.C.A. v. Old Collegians and Sydenham combined,
