JURF GOSSIP. Nominations close to-day for the Pov•rty Bay Turf Club's Summer Meeting, and on Monday for the laraBaki Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. Acceptances close to-dny for t> Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting. There will be racing to-day at Foxton, and to-morrow at Wellington, Foxton,' and Kawakawa. Previous to the racing at Trentham yesterday a parade of yearlings .w held of yotmgst*" to be offered at the Woodstock sales to-day by Messrs Pyne, Gould Guinness, and Co., «md Wright, Stephenson and'Oo. both firms actmg in Conjunction with Australian firms The stock paraded was of verj fcjw duality wolf got up, and included some PSters wlich are certain to bnng high prices. In the Pyne, Gould, Guinness lots there should be keen competition tor the colt by Paper Moncy-Puttce, and the Tea Tray-Lady Cilia colt, the latter a half-brother to Gasbag. A Aery fine-looking gelding »'«>»» &^ by Solfcrino from Kore Madder. There is a good deal of interest centred in the Taper Money-Lpitaph filly to be offered by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., and she is certain to bring big money. There is esvery promise of the sales being a record success, for, besides a truly representative gathering of racing men, a number of visitors has arrived from Australia keen to do business.
Backers at Wellington yesterday bad rather a bad time, for'in both the Wellington Cup and Tole- ' graph Handicap outsiders won alter great finishes. Rapier was backed solidly in Ins engagement at Manawatu during the holidays, and even Avon tho Martou Cup in irreproachable stylo Speculators, however, had evidently tired « him, and the big price he paid would come as a welcome surprise to a fair number of Canterbury supporters. W. Brown, an apprentice attached to the Cutts' Bros.' stable, rode a splendid race, and it was due to Jus finishing powers that Rapier won. Te Monanui did not seem to make his run soon enough, and though he made a great effort toward the end, Rapier, once the whip was drawn, was going stride for stride with him. Mint Leaf's finishing run in the , High-Weight Handicap was something tp enthuse over, and the same may bo said of Gold Mint's effort in the final event of the day. / It is,stated that J. Beale will go north on Saturday to ride Rapier in Monday's engagements'. Centrepiece is certain to have benoifited considerably as a result of yesterday's race. Com Moneys went a rattling good race in the Telegraph Handicap, and is evidently better than most people imagine. But for drawing an outside toosition at the barrier he would probably have won. S. Waddell has sent Glad Eight, the two-year-old half'Sister 1 , by Paper Money, to Gold Light and other good performers, home to her owner, Mr W. T. Hazlett, in Southland, it having been decided to let her mature further before-racings her.
Beacon Light is at present out in a paddock at Stuart WaddelPs Green* | meadows establishment. The foreleg j which has occasioned his trainer so much ; trouble and disappointment has " been subjected to pretty, severe firing. It will therefore be some considerable time, /even should the treatment prove effective, before the Boniform—Simper gelding will be seen out in public again.' With suoh a difficult customer to keen on his pins. Waddell did. expeedingly well to get three good wins out of him early in the season. The widely-travelled F. McCabe intends to set up a 8 a publio trainer at one of the Auokland suburban tracks, and <hiß application for a license will probably be considered by the Licensing Committee this week. One of the horses he is to train is Kyngzone, who has shown some pace in private, but has failed to reproduce it in his races. According to a compilation made by Mr T,„H. Lowry the descendants of his brood-.mare Gossip have,/between stake money'-and- yearling sale prices, brought in no less:-than £60,000. Gossip was, sold in 1905 tit-. Mr H. Friedlander's sale.of the Kelburn Lodge Stud, Ashburton, for 340 guineas, with a foal at foot by Pilgrim's Progress, and in foal to the same sire. At the same sale, a yearling by Finland from Gossip, subsequently known as the fly»ne Bobrikoff, was sold at 80 guineas. It is stated that a patron of H. Doyle's stable visited Auckland recently with a view to purchasing a horse. 'Antrim Boy and King Smock were considered, but the price asked for King j Smock was thought to be too high, •while other difficulties were encountered in connexion with Antrim Boy. The Awapuni trainer G. New has now a string of 12 horses under his care. He has recently added the Sarto—Maidi gelding Maidos. The gelding, who stands. some 17 hands, has been hacked about for the past twelve months, hence his absence from the ac- , tive ranks. The same trainer is at present engaged in breaking in a three-year-old Cynic—Glengyle gelding called Sun Yat Sen, who was recently Bent to him from Hastings. Diogenes went lame jusjt before the Christmas meetings, and in consov queuce.had to be scratched for the 'Auckland Cup and also the Manawatu Cup, He is now reported to be progressing very satisfactorily, and another month may find him among the active brigade again. The Licensing Committee of the Kacing Conference will meet this week, and it is possible that there will be an addition or two to the ranks of licensed horsemen. ' j
Since winning the Hack Cup at New Plymouth on Boxing Day. Bent has gone on improving, and will be a runner in the Foxton Cup to-day. As the class in that event is better than on many previous occasions, Bent may not be quite stood enough to win. A veteran of the game in Borealis lias rejoined the active ranks at AwaT>uni, the aged Califomian gelding, not baving. ,raced since the Hawke's Bay Meeting of June, 1925, when he was a runner in the Whakatu Hurdles. He was exercised on Saturday morning by Huntsman B. Waller, so presumably le will later be hunted. "When the last mail left Melbourne, . r Ashle.r Reed was second on the list of Victorian winning jockeys. He had ibad 100 mounts for 18 wins, 19 seconds, and 11 thirds. The Programme Committee of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club has de- . cided upon the following programmo •'for the Meeting on March sth:—Mofcikarara Handicap, of llOsovs, five furlongs 5 Wairewa Handicap Trot (harness),oMOO bovs, 3.42 class, one mile »na • halfV.Tarawera Hack Handicap, '>' SL WQ-W* B * .nine furlongs; Peninsula of 150 sojs, one mile quarter; Ahuriri Hack Hahdi- ,; v;*a>.;or. The Bay of Islands Meeting will be held at Kawakawa to-morrow and fairly Rood fields are engaged. Among those in the Cup is Aurumavis, who has performed well up to a mile. She is not meeting a very strong field, and probably most opposition will come from Itahepoto and Golden Krist. After the running of the first division of the Ascot Handicap, Sydney, last week, the stewards called J. Martin, the rider of Prince Offa, into their room. The police were also called in, and later displayed a small hand battery covered with vulcanite, round which was wound a piece of elastic, with a loop sufficiently big for a finger to fit through. The stewards issued the following report:—"An enquiry was held into the alleged use of an electric battery on Prince Offa in the first division of the Ascot Handicap. After hearing the evidence of A. G. Craft, owner and trainer, Mr W. Deaves, who saddled the horse, and the rider, J. Martin, the stewards were satisfied that the battery had been used, and decided to disqualify A. G. Craft, W. Deavcs, the jpckev (J. Martin), and the brown gelding Prince Offa for life."
Nominations for an A.J.C. or Victoria Derby are now invariably much more numerous than those for an English Derby (says the Sydney "Referee"). There are 612 entries for this year's A.J.C. Derby, and 552 for the V.R.C. Derbv, while for tho English Derby of 1928 the total is 350, thn Ag.i Khan, with 19. being the principal subscriber. Although the nominations for each of Australia's principal Derbies nearly doublo those for tho Epsom event, the latter is sure' to have the greater number of runners. This suggests that each ye.ir the percentage of three-year-olds with pretensions to class is much higher in England than in Australia.
TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the Forbury Park T.C.'s Summer Meeting close to-day at 5 p.m. Handicaps for the Cheviot T.C.'s Annual Meeting will be declared tomorrow. The prospects' of the Cheviot Trotting Club holding a successful Meeting on February uth are bright. The secretary, Mr F. West, states that the dirt track is in splendid order and should provide excellent going. This course and Alexandra Park arc, strange to relate, the only two where the horses race the reverse way. J. J. Kennerley has decided not to allow Peter Bingen to be idle, and he is again in work at Belfast. P. Riddle is keeping Peter McKinney, Golden Bubble, Parkwood,. and Margalong in strong work at headquarters, and thoy are likely to represent his stable at Forbury Park. The ruling favourites for the Dunedin Cup are Black Admiral, Jack Potts, Derby, and Parkwood. A large field of twenty-seven horses is engaged in -the Electric Handicap, and the public's fancy are Final McKinney and Firpo. The former is owned and trained by J. Henderson at Oamaru, while the latter is a recent addition to M. B. Edwards's team. Stunt Artist is striding along freely in his work and it should not be long before he ie found on the winning list. The Logan Pointer gelding, Transport, is training on the right way and is likely to represent N. L. Price's stable at ForWury Park. After a successful season at the stud, Real Guy is in work at Santa Rosa Farm, and A. Hendriksen may race the American-bred trotter in the autumn-

The Trentham High-weight Handicap did not produce a very exciting race, for aiter Oriflamb had led into the straight Outfit appeared on the scene, and the struggle was short and sharp, Outfit Binning nicely. Oriflamb appeared to be cased a bit at the finish, and Mint Leaf, who had put in a great run from the distance, almost caught him as the post was reached.. Oriflamb looked wc.\ and galloped most generously, but he -met a fair sort in the winner, who may yet do better still. Oi those engaged, the most likely to do well in the near future ia Mint Leaf, whose finishing run was particularly good. Lysander Beaten. Lysander was twice a3 heavily backed as was Limited, the second favourite, in the Wellington Stakes, but after hopping out smartly ho lost his position at the turn into the straight and failed to moke up his leeway, though he finished gamely under pressure. Limited was always well placed and won very decisively at the finish from Silvermine, a two-year-old daughter of Catmint, and that great performer Silver Link. Silvortninc showed a torrent of speed, and will run out six furlongs when more matured. High Finance bolted bofors the race, and jumped a, fence at the top of the straight. She looked like repeating tho performance a minute later, when her rider, T. Green, promptly jumped off. She ran a creditable race considering her self-imposed task. Stormy all the Way. Stormy gave a taste of his quality in the Apprentices' Plate, for after a gbod dispatch he was quickly in front, made j.vactically all his own running, and, though having only half a length in his ftffour at tho finish, won very comfortably from Assurance The latter was slow to find his feet, but came with a great inn at the finish. Stormy deserves the good reputation he gained as a. result of his visit to Sydney, and he appears * hack well above the average. Aston, a four-year-old chestnut gelding, sired in England, is a type that will improve with Tacing, and may do still better at the Meeting. Bank Note, one of the well-backed division, i 3 looking extremely well, but raced badly. Brown Suspended. After going a hundred yards, Pangolin, ridden by B. Brown, fell. -The judicial steward enquired into the matter, and found Brown guilty of careless riding, suspending him for a week, • Another Close Finish. Four two-year-olds, the' property of Mr V, Eiddiford, were bracketed in the Fitzherbert Handicap, but even the four chances were not sufficient to make the bracket favourite. Melissa, Thaw, Polydeotes, and Tone were always in the firiug-lino, and at the finish Thaw won by a short margin. It seemed that had Green commenced riding Melissa a bit earlier she would have won, for when called on she rapidly overhauled the leader. " Otairi, a good-looking gelding by Paper Money from Isabel, hailing from F. Tilley's Fordell stable, appeal's a most likely customer to win a race when properly seasoned. Silver Coot was never prominent from start to finish.
Kapler's Close Call. The Wellington Cup was full of excitement, for Fresco and Clarinda set a merry pace, and Rapine, as usual, was quickly tailed off last. Half a mile from home the pace was still a scorcher, and at this stage Fresco was going very solidly in front, and Civility, Jfapier, Te Monanui, Count Cavour, Royal Mint, and Star Ranger were prominent. In the straight Rapier took the load for the first time, and his rider was at him with hands and heels. The Monanui was putting in a slashing finish, but when W. Brown drew his whip on Rapior he responded in most generous fashion, though he finished only a narrow margin in front of To Monanui, with whom the honours of the, race rested. The rider of Rapier must be given credit for a well-ridden' race, capped off by a finish full of vigour. Rapine was out of the firing-line at the entrance of the straight, but put in an electrio run that gained him' a place. Footfall went a rattling good race, but Count Cavour, who had every chance, failed just when he was expected to go on. At the end of a mile and a quarter Fresco was going beautifully, but class told its tale at the finish. Hynanna and Piuthair were always well placed and ran fair races. Inferno Plays Up. The Anniversary Handicap showed Inferno on his worst behaviour, for, provioua to the Btart, ho bolted twico round the course, and when the barrier lifted he whipped round and took no part in the race. Fenman and Centrepiece led until the straight was reached, but the latter then faded out, and Ring the Bell came with an all-conquer-ing run to win by half a length. piece finished without any . jlash, but was probably in need of a race. Southern Horses Prominent. Another great contest was witnessed in the Telegraph Handicap, which proved a complete victory for South Island horses, trainjockeys, who filled all three places. From the start High Pitch appeared to be leading, but he lost his position before entering the straight, and here Corn Money, Mimetic, Paperohaae, Licinius, Shirley, Cawnpore, and Booster were all in the firingline. In a great race to the post Booster •got up in time to defeat Paperchase by the narrowost of margins. It was a stirring finish, and supporters'of the winner woro rewarded with a handsome dividend. Evidently his good running in the Stewards' Handicap at Ricoarton had been forgotten. Corn Money showed great brilliancy, as he drew a. bod position at the start! and was in front after going three furlongs. Gold Mint Unlucky. Another great dividend was furnished in the Ruapehu Handicap, which concluded the day's proceedings. Lady Ideal looked a winner a hundred yards from the post, when Starboard Light, a five-year-old gelding by Feramorz from Pendant, put in a v great rush, and he appeared to win very nicely. Gold. Mint, the Canterbury horse, received a bump at the start, but was fairly flying at tho finish. It seemed that he would have won but for the accidental interference at the start.
