CANTERBURY JUSTICES' COUNCIL.
WOMEN ADMITTED TO MEMBERSHIP.
A meeting of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Council -was held'last night. Present: Mr Alfred Williams (president) and Messrs C. H. Gilby, G. E. Franklin, H. Herbert Smith, Henry Holland, M.P.. F. H. Christian, H. P. Herbert, A. H. Hobbs, J. W. Baty, F. B. Creswell, and J. Kussell Brunt (registrar).
Correspondence was Received from the Federal Registrar of tlio Australasian Justices of the Peace Conference, hold at Adelaide, enclosing the "Honorary Magistrate," containing details of the business transacted at the Conference, with a request that the Canterbury Association be an affiliated Association. ■
Correspondence was received from Mr R. P. Ward, J.P., . Under-Secretary, Justice Department, Wellington, to the effect that free postage stamps to the value of i's would be granted annually for the work of the Association.
Mr J. Salek, J.P., Dominion Registrar, notified that the annual meeting and conference would be held at Dunedin on Thursday, March 24th. It was requested that all conference business be forwarded to the registrar, Wellington, not later than February 4th.
Mr J. H. Fray, J.P., of Auckland, had forwarded 260 copie3 of the new Justices' Journal, which the registrar reported had been distributed to members. On the motion of Mr F. B. Creswell, seconded by Mr G. K. Franklin, it was unanimously agreed: "That women Justices be admitted as members of the Association on the same basis as men." The following were elected members of the Association: —Hon. John Barr, M.L.C.. Messrs Malcolm Campbell (Geraldine), John E. Fleming, W. M. Geddes (Waimate), Godfrey Hal! (Hororata), Geo. R. Holton (Ainberley), Eu>in J. Howard, M.P.. John Joyce (North Loburn), John A. Kiugan (Prebbleton), Frank Harvey Knight (Ashburton), John Kennedy (Geraldine), Wm. Thns. Lindsay (Waikari), Wm. T. Lester (Lyttelton). Wm. A. Rowse (Rangiora), also the newly-appointed women Justices, Mes dames A. I. Frner aud Elizabeth McCombs. A committee, consisting of Messrs A. Williams, C. H. Gilby, G. E. Franklin, and J. R. Brunt was appointed to consider remits. The next members* social wos fixed for Saturday, March 13th.
