PENSIONS SYSTEM.
COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE.
[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 18. The Government have been for some time looking into the question of the position of the various superannuation systems of which there are four in existence, namely the Public Service, the teachers, and the railways. The fourth is the National Provident Fund, the benefits of which are available to the general public, and can be regarded for all practical purposes as a superannuation scheme. The Minister in charge of the Public Service Superannuation Department (Hon. Mr Nosworthy) stated to-day that the Government considered that the time had arrived when the whole question should be enquired into, and anomalies removed. Cabinet had therefore appointed what might be regarded as a Departmental Committee to investigate and report on the whole matter. The committee would comprise a representative from each of the four funds mentioned, probably the chairman or the officer who usually acted for him in his absence, the Public Service Commissioner, and the Secretary to the Treasury. The committee would consist of six persons. It was probable also that a Government actuary would he available for consultation if required, but he would not be a member. The committee would make its report to the Minister in due course.
