CAR SMASH.
ON LINCOLN ROAD
FARMER KILLED. Still gripping the wheel of his threeseater car, which had overturned, Thomas Joseph H. Welsh, a farmer, Sutherland's road, Halswell, was found dead in a deep ditch on the Lower Lincoln road about 7 a.r*. yesterday. Bounding a bend in the road, Welsh apparently missed an electric light standard "by a foot, and in attempting to avoid a collision with the pole swerved out to the centre of the road, and then back on to the edge. The two wheels on the driving side of the car skidded into the ditch, causing the car to overturn, and fall upside down in the ditch. Though the edge of the ditch was fairly sharp, it was a ledge rather lower down which held the car. The engine was iu gear, but the lights were turned off. It was purely by chance that the car was discovered, for it could not be seen from the road. To extricate the body was a most difficult task, and it was found necessary to dig awav part of the bank of the ditch. The back of Welsh's head was terribly injured, and ho had been dead some time when found. "Welsh's widow, who did not know of the fatality until later in tho morning, was expecting to go into a nursing home yesterday. There is only one child. An" inquest was opened before the coroner, Mr H. A. Young, yesterday afternoon. After evidence of identification was given by Mr P. P. J. Amodeo, solicitor, who appeared for the family of the deceased, the inquest was adjourned sine die.
