BAND CONTEST.

ARRANGEMENTS AT TEMUKA. The guarantee necessary to run a B grade band contest at Temuka from December 27th to 30th, 1927, has been forthcoming, being in excess of all expenditure likely to be entailed. Messrs T. P. Hall (secretary, South Island Bands' Association) and A. M. Payne (Begg and Co., Christchurch) visited Temuka on Thursday, and were very much impressed with the Domain, which, with its beautiful surroundings, is an ideal place for a contest to be held, especially the quick-step contest. A general meeting of members of. the Temuka Business Men's Association was held on Thursday evening, when the president introduced Messrs Hall and Payne to the 25 members present, and a very cordial welccme was extended to them by the Mayor (Mr G. B. CartwTight). Mr Hall congratulated the Association on their enterprise in holding a band contest in Temuka, and assured them they would have a successful contest. The executive accepted the application in a good spirit, because it was not often that a town the size of Temuka had enterprise to go in for a contest. The guarantee at the present time was more than the amount of expenditure the Association had to provide for. and all bands entering the contest could rest assured that-the prizemoney would be forthcoming. It spoke wonders for the energy that had been put forth, for already one-sixth more had been guaranteed than what the whole of the outlay would eventually be. Mr Hall said that out of the 25 B graclo bands in the South Island, they should surely get eight, to ten bands competing. If they could make sure of eight bands the contest must be a success, and he thought being held in the holidays would make the Temuka contest more successful than the one in Christchurch in February. 1928. It is anticipated that the guarantee will ba extended to £IOOO without difficulty.
