The good acceptances received for the Ashburton Racing Club's Meeting, which will be held to-day, give every promise of providing excellent racing, and as the recent rains must have improved the track tho going is certain to be well-nigh perfect. The class of horses engoged in the various races is very fair, and in tho Lagmhor Plate an opportunity will be afforded a number of maiden horses to make their debut with the colours up. For the convenience of - North' Canterbury sportsmen a special' train will leave Christchuroh at 10.10 a.m., arriving at the course in ample time for the first race, which will bo started at 12.30 p.m,

In the High-Weight Handicap a useful field will go to the post, but a number of those engaged, including Corn Rigs and Goldtown, claim other engagements, during the day. Goldtown and Prophet's Mark look a likely i pair, and perhaps Waterlow may find the company to her liking, though an injury to her hock sustained the other day. is not likely to improve her chances.

Thorndale, Brightling, and Sir Roy, three well-fancied candidates for the Winchmore Hnndicap, also claim engagements in the Moreton Hack Handicap, but if starters in the former race must be hatdy at the, finish. Brightling is another engaged who has possibilities. John Bradbury will probably start favourite for the Tinwnld Handicap, and on recent form is not badly treated in being" allotted 9-0. During the present season he has won four races besides being second twice and third once. Margaret Birney is likely to be more fancied than the remainder. In the Lagmhor Plate the quality of the acceptors is practically unknown, but-Princess Mafalda, Royal Tractor, and' Tripaway have reputations for speed, and some interest will he taken in the form shown by Satrap. If reserved for the Moreton Hack Handicap, Thorndale, Brightling, and „ Sir Roy must be seriously considered, * while All Colours cannot be left out of consideration. Only six acceptors are in the Wakanui Handicap, and perhaps Economist, even with 9-1, will prove too good for the opposition. Corn Rigs appears most dangerous of the others. The two trotting events have drawn good fields and amongst those that may race prominently are Patsy Phegan, Tom Marvin, Yen, and Winter Audubon.

The Riccarton horseman, D. Cotton, put up something of a record on the West Coast, when he "rode the winners of three Cups in succession. He won the Westland Cup on Moorland and the Greymouth Cup and Reefton Cup on Goosestep. At Ashburton to-day Cotton will ride Corn Rigs and Ma Mie. Heisler, "who hails from the Auckland district and won several races on the West Coast during the holidays, is at Riccarton. He looks particularly well and Bhould add further to his list of victories. J. Beale will ride En Route, Gold Mint, and Bcyphia in their engagements at Ashburtoo-to-day, C. Eastwood will ride Ophir, Moratorium and Tripaway, and A. Eastwood will have the mounts on Gay Queen and Spearman.

Rivalry is being pottered about and seems to have thrown off all signs of the lameness that'troubled her. A useful sort of gelding in Master John is one of J. Lindsay's team at Riccarton. He is by Day Comet and comes from the Waikato district. Some curiosity has been evinced as to the origin and meaning of the name AteVeria borne by the three-year-old colt by Rossendale, from Chen Chen, eold recently by Mr M. H. Tims to Mr W. H. Gaisford, Mr W. J. Ralph has Biich an intimate knowledge of the Maori language that one can always depend upon that gentleman 'to unravel points, at issue. "Aterena, it is learned, is simply "pigeon" for Australia, in which country, it may be added, the colt was bred. The West-port Jockey Club has decided on Saturday, April 2nd, and Monday, April 4th ' as the dates for the 1927 Autumn Meeting on the Beach Racecourse, states a. message from the special correspondent of The Punas at Greymouth. TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the Cheviot T.C.'s 'Annual Meeting close to-day, at 9 p.m. Acceptances for the Hawke's Bay &nd tho Te Arbha T.C.'s Annual Meeting close on Monday. After a successful season at the stud, the American-bred trotter, Guy Parrish, has resumed work at New Brighton. Prince Pointer and Kotuku Jack, who have been freely raced of late, are on the easy list. A. Hendriksen has leased the three-year-old filly, Wee Audubon, to the Reefton mentor, D. Woods. Holly Bell is reported to be training on the right way and is likely to represent M. B. Edwards's stable at the Hawke's Bay T.C.'s Annual ingW. Warren has a useful team in work at Yaldhurst, and his stable is likely to be represented at Forbury Park by Bingenette, Great Earl, and Berenice.

At the Old Glory Sale, held in Chicago, the two-year-old Adam, by Arion Guy, brother to Guy Parrish, was sold for 17.000 dollars, approximately £3604. : • -

The nominations for the Poverty Bay T.C.'s Annual Meeting are not large, bbt the fields include some useful material. GREYMOUTH J.C. '— MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (special to the press.) GREYMOUTH, January 14. A meeting of the District Committee ol the Greymouth Jockey Club was held this afternoon. Those present wen.; Messrs T. E. Coates (ohairman), W. R. Kettle, D J. Evans, W. H. Parfitt, H. F. Doogan, and W. B. Gilbert. The programme of the Kumara Jockey Club for the annual race meeting on Easter Monday for stakes totalling £660, was approved, subject to certain exemptions being granted by the Racing Conference. The Westland Racing Club's programme for the Easter meeting on April 20th for stakes totalling £660 was approved. Reports submitted by the Greymouth and Reefton Jockey Clubs and the Westland Seeing Club in connexion with the Midsummer Meetings were approved. Applications for jockeys' licenses were received from M. Kirwan and A. E. McMullan. It was resolved to forward the same to the Racing Conference as the facts relating to these applicants were already known to the Racing Committee. ' A trainer's license was recommended for Edward V. Slader, of Kumara, subject to the application being signed by the chairman of the Kumara Jockey Club. The committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club subsequently met, when the balancesheet for the recent meeting was submitted and considered satisfactory. The programme for the Greymouth Jockey Club's Easter Meeting, to be held on Saturday, April 23rd, for stakes amounting to £B9O, was approved. The gate receipts for the meeting showed an increase of £250 over the previous year's corresponding meeting.

OWNERS' AND BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee was held on Wednesday, Mr D. F. Dennehy presiding over a good attendance.

It was decided to arrange for a special horse train for the Forbury Meeting. Members mentioned the dangerous and unprotected pathway which horses had to traverse when being taken from the ship at Quail Island for quarantine purposes. It was decided to write to the Agricultural Department on the matter.

The secretary was instructed to write to the Westport and Greymouth Trotting Clubs thanking them for their hospitality and consideration shown to the visiting owners and horsemen at their recent meetings. It was decided to ask the Westport Club to start all their races in future half a furlong down the straight, as it would then give all horses a fair chance of safely negotiating the first turn. Twenty new members were elected.
