OPAWA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
1 A special meeting of the Opawa .School 1 Committee was held to consider (ho advisability of holding a school picnic thi.< year. Present: Messrs T. W. West (in the chair). Messrs Coleman, McDowell, P. T. Boyce. Mac guiunis. Brittenden, Mackey, and Inglcy. A letter was received from the headmaster. Mr | A. J. Wickes, tending his resignation, he having been appointed to the Waltham school in a similar capacity. Much regret was expressed at tho district losing the valuable services of Mr Wickes combined with tributes of sincere appreciation of the keen and conscientious discharge of his duties dur- | ing the six years be has beeu at Opawa. Jfr 11. D. Smith, from Hokitikn, has been appointed in place of Mr Ensor, resigned. A report on the tuberculosis tendency examination of scholars was received, and considered very reassuring as to the scholars ! in the district. Last year voting paper> \ were sent out to all parents as to their sup- ' port of a picnic proposal. Large numbers j voted in favour, but did not attend the j picnic which resulted in a loss. The com- I mittee therefore decided not to attempt a j picnic, this year. It was reported that rc-i- j dents were much annoyed by larrikins a*scmbling in the old school grounds on Sim | day afternoons. The police authoritijs were | requested to take drastic means to supprc<the nuisance.
