COAL HULK SINKING.

BEACHED AT WELLINGTON

[THE PEEBS Bpieltf.SttTice,]

WELLINGTON, January 13,

The iron hulk Arawata, the property of the Union Company, was beachecj in a sinking condition shortly after 11 6'clock this morning, alongside the Kaiwarra railway station. She has a full load of coal on hoard, and was being brought alongside th« steamer Devon, which is anchored in the stream, for bunkering, when she bumped into the steamer and sprang a leak. The tugs Terawhiti and Natone towed her to the shore immediately. It was found she was leaking seriously and she is now lying with her bows high up on the rocks. It is feared, however, that her back is broken as the waist of the hulk and her stern are well under water;

The Arawata was originally a passenger steamer of 576 tons and was launched at Glasgow in 1875. She had a speed of 15 knote and she completed the trip from Glasgow to Melbourne in o2 days, including stoppages. She also did the trip from Melbourne to I'ort Chalmers in five d#yA, at that time the fastest voyage made.
