Mr Maurice Guthrie is leaving on Thursday evening for a business trip to Australia, and expects to be absent for about six weeks. Mr B. S. Kent, Divisional Superintendent, New Zealand Railways, Christehureh, has ■returned after a visit to Grcymouth. Mr L. W. Eobertspn, District Locomotive Engneer, Cliristclhircli, is at present visiting the West Coast-on Departmental business. Mi Arthur Rose, president of tho United New Zealand licensed Victuallers' Association, left yesterday on a visit to Marlborough and Nelson. Signor Antonio Notariello returned yesterday from the Xprth Island. In Jive weeks' time he will leave lor Europe. Mr Bertram Phillips, brother, of Lord Kilsant, of England, was a passenger bv the Remuera, which arrived in "Wellington pn Monday. Messrs W. B. Williams (Auckland), C. Crocker, J. If. Flockton (Wellington), and J. K. Macfarlaue (Parnassus) arc guests at the Clarendon Hotel.
Mr G. H. Luckhurst, who is about to leave Duijedin for Melbourne, was the recipient of a presentation from the Otago Centre, New Zealand Athletic Association, on Monday evening. Professor Hewitsoni who recently retired from the position of principal at the' Knox Theological College at Dunedin, returned to Wellington on Monday, after a brief holiday Australia.
Mr H. H. Balpeavis, private secretary to the Natiye Minister, has been appointed by the Government to make all arrangements for the large gathering of Natjyes. at Rotprua to welcome the Duke'and Duchess of York. Mr Justice Scluitt, who has ju*t retired' from the Supreme Court Bench iii Australia, arrived in Wellington on Monday by the Maheno. He is on his way to America and Great Britain.

Mr Keith A. I'limuier, 8.A., who has been connected with tho teaching •staffs of Scots and Wellesjey Colleges, has accepted a house mastership at Adelaide University, and will leave 'Wellington for Sydney, en route to South Australia by the Manuka on January 21st. The presentation of a gold fountain pen and .pencil was made by the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday to Mr. J. Mr James McDonald, Assistant Director. Dominion Museum, has retired from that position after 22 years' public service. Mr McDonald, who is ■well known throughout the Dominion in connexion with art matters, will retain his seat as a member of the Maori Arts and Crafts Board.
Air Black, son of the late professbr of chemistry at Otajnp University, arrived in the Dominion on Monday by the Maheno, after having several years of mining experience j n 'Western Australia and South Africa. He is returning to Otago as a member of the university staff. Mr H. P. Robinson, who has been ■accountant in the office of the North Auckland land district since ifc was established some seven years ago, has been notified of his appointment as chief clerk of the Lands and Survey Dopartment at Christchureh. Mr G. J. Beeson, accountant at the Wellington office, will succeed him in the North Auckland Land office.
Sergeant D. B, Murray, late of the South Dunedin police, who has been transferred to Addingtou, was recently presented with an oak silver-mounted tray, suitably inscribed, by his fellowofficers. Constable Pratt, in making the presentation on behalf of his colleagues, expressed their regret at Sergeant Murray's departure, ajid wished him every success in the future. Detective Farquharson spoke on behalf of the detective 'branch.
