TARIFF REVISION.

FARMERS AND MANUFACTURERS. CO-OPERATION DESIRED. j[ r a. W. Beiiven, representing the Canterbury Manufaeturers' Association, waited upon the executive of the North Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Association yesterday, with reference to cooperation between the two bodies in » he matter „f tariff revision. Mr Wpaven said that he was present to ask that representatives of the Union and his own organisation should meet iuul discuss the question together. He realised that wheat was an essential industry and should be given some measure of protection. At the same time, however, it was essential that there should be other openings for the number of immigrants "ho were regularly arriving in the Dominion, it being evident that New Zealand could not carry on solely as u country of primary industries." U would be a splendid idea if ;l permanent committee, consisting of live representatives of the Union, and ; similar number from the Association, should be set up to deal with such problems as were likely to arise from time to time. Differences of Detail. Mr W. AV. Mulholland said that the proposal commended itself to him and would, he felt sure, be productive of ■■■•ood. lie thought that the differences between the two organisations were chiefly a matter of detail: there was really no need for either body to forgo its principles. • The chairman (Mr J. D. Hall) also approved of the proposal. A committee consisting of Messrs J. D. Hall, R. T. McMillan, and W. W. Mulholland was set up to represent the executive. Mr McMillan suggested that evidence should be prepared with a view to placing it before ilie Tariff Jleyision Commission, which is to sit shortly in Clnistchnrch. The evidence should deal principally with regard to duty on flour unrt wheat. The chairman was appointed to represent the Union at the sitting of the Commission.
