MAORI CHIEF DIES.

About a thousand Maoris are assembled at Ngaruawahia to take part in the tangi beiug held in connexion with the death of the Maori chief Pokaia Tawhiao. aged -IS years, who died at Aotea, Kawhia. The body was brought to Ngaruawahia. Amongst the assembled visitors are prominent-chiefs from Tauranga, Taulnaniuui, and Matamata. The casket is lying in a specially made hut surrounded with native mats. Deceased was a brother of the late Maori "King" Mahuta, and was therefore an uncle of the present head chief, Ea+3.
