FAT LAMBS

The entry was again a small one, comprising 2570 head. Quality was generally good. Tho sale was a good, sound one from the outset. Prices generally, particularly for prime medium-weights, ' wera fully up to, and in cases exceeded, schedule rales for the week. ' Theso are the same as last week—BJd for 36's and under and 8d for 37-42's. Top price for a pen was 31s Id, for 14 sent forward by W. Hood (Chertsey).

The yarding' was practically all Canterbury sheep, the exception being a truck lot from Invercargill. These were very primo sheep. There were soveral outstanding lines of local wethers, but generally the yarding was of average quality, there being a honvier proportion of ewes forward than for some time. The aalo over the earlier stages was a sound ono at the average of hist week's values, and it was not marked by tho same irregularity. Tho exporters bought to a limited extent, values, except for light sheep, being beyond their limits. The firm salo continued until the final stages. The entry was a shade smaller than last week, comprising 475 head, as against 005. Quality, however, was not nearly so good, tho proportion of prime beef being much smaller, whilst cows were forward in greater numbers than ever. There were no outside cattle to hand. The few lines of steers were from average to good sorts. The early section of tho offering was mostly inferior cows and for this class the sale was a very hard one, values being down by an average of 15s per head. Steers and good heifers sold practically at last week's rates for the best quality, although at the end of tho yarding a good lino of steers sold at easier rates, tho majority of the larger buyers having left tho market at this stage. It included a line of steers from Marlborough. They were mostly rough sorts. The demand for good sorts was satisfactory. Values were:— Good three-year-old steers £8 5.*. The sale was a good one throughout, and most lots were disposed of at prices satisfactory from the point of view of vendors. Prices showed a slight improvement on late rates, especially towards the end of the sale. Values were:— Good second, third, and fourth calvcrs £8 10s to £ll ss, extra good to £ls 15s.
