BECOMING SERIOUS. NEARLY 200 REGISTERED. There are now 172 men registered as unemployed at the Government Bureau i»g registered since Tuesday last. n g regstered since Tuesday last. Twenty-nine new registrations were made yesterday, mostly by labouring men. Only a few casual positions have been found for some of the men since the holidays. Deputation to Citizens' Committee. The Citizens' Unemployment Committee yesterday morning received a deputation from the unemployed. Mr E. IT. Andrews was in the chair. Mr S. Fournier, heading the unemployed, urged the re-opening of relief depots. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, ho said, had not coped adequately with the matter of giving relief.

Mr W. Dunkley said he could obtain only one day's work a week from the Hospital Board, receiving I2s Cd worth of groceries in return. In a large fani: ily those supplies did not go far. The chairman said the deputation's representations would be given consideration. The re-opening of the depot would not go i'ar—it was work that was required. It would be little good appealing again to the public at present, as unemployment would no doubt be worse during the wiuter months. When the deputation withdrew the committee decided to send a telegram to the Acting Prime Minster (the Hon. Mr Downie Stewart) asking him _to open up some Government work, owing to the seriousness of the position. •There is still a sum of £l3l in the possession of the committee, which it was hoped might form the nucleus of a fund for the winter. It is now intended to call the committee together to gain authority to spend the money now. Appeal from Trades Hall. The Trades Hall Unemployment Committee ycsterday„seut a telegram to the Acting-Primo Minister asking that immediate Government assistance might be provided owing' to the serious unemployment existing in Christchurch.
