OPINION IN CANADA.
(BY QASLE—JBSSS ASSOCIATION— COrSMOHT.J (ACSTRAWAS AKO Jf.a." CABW ABSOCJATIOH.)
OTTAWA, January 9.
The volume of editorial opinion in both Eastern and Western Canada indicates that no delicate situation has been created by Mr Bruce's outspoken comments.
The facts regarding inter-Imperial and International affairs were so tactfully advanced by him that far from feeling resentment against Australia, every section of the country overwhelmingly endorsed them. Mr Bruce has expressed personal gratification with this state of affairs.
Newspapers, in summarising the posv tion, express the hope that Australian Prime Ministers will waH« a practice of visiting Canada whenever the occasion offers.
Mr Bruce has been giving attention to various problems connected with trade relations between, this country aud Australia, One of the most important achievements was in regard to immigration restrictions imposed by the United States against Australian business men.
Mr Bruce, in this connexion, had a long conference with Mr Frank B. Kellogg and pointed out the disadvantages of the present system under which Australian business men are forced to leave the country in six months, with a possible extension. This is not the case with America.!? business men resident in Australia, Mr Kellogg expressed entire sympathy and said that he was agreeable to widen the provisions of the Treaty of 1815 to apßly to Australia. This will give Australian business men unrestricted entry into the United States. Mr Kellogg stated, however, that this irnplied certain legal and possible polir tical action, and he was immediately referring the question to his legaj adT visers to devise the speediost way out of the impasse. He stated that in the meantime no obstacles would be placed in the way of Australian business men who applied for an extension under the existing law. ■Australians now in America are extremely with Mr Brnce's sue? cess, which has relieved an irritating situation.
