CITY'S TELEPHONES.
CHANGING THE SYSTEM. OVERHEAD TO UNDERGROUND. Eeforo the end of this year the streets of Christehurch will be almost bare of telephone poles and the masses of wire which they carry. All that will be left overhead will be the trunk lines and the poles carrying the telephone wires into subscribers' premises. This state of affairs is coming about through the conversion of the phone plant from manual to automatic working. The change over from an overhead system to an underground system of reticulation involves a considerable amount of duplication and reconstruct tion. The work was commenced during recent years in accordance with the Department's policy of bringing the whole of New Zealand's telephond systems up to date as soon as possible. Activity in Christehurch is increasing day by day, arid linesmen are to be seen working in all localities in the City and suburbs.
