U.S.A. NAVY.

BIG APPROPRIATION WANTED.

(BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTEIOHT.) (AUSTRALIAN ASD N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Received January 9th, 3.5 p.m.;

NEW YORK, January 8.

President Coolidge's wishes held '-'P the Amendment to the Naval Bill, asking for an appropriation of 450,000 dollars to construct three cruisers. The Amendment was defeated despite excited debates in which the Republican leaders denounced the President's message and policies. [An earlier message stated: —The Naval Appropriations Bill, carrying dollars, which is nearly 10,000,000 dollars below the present appropriations, was reported to the House and is expected to be duly passed. Heeding the President's request for economy, the Committee asked for no appropriations for three cruisers and two giant dirigibles, and left the navy personnel at its present figure of 82,500. The recent proposals for ten cruisers were approved. President Coolidge stands independently in another Bill calling for no actual appropriation of funds, hence the present situation. There is no actual demand for money for new fighting craft, though it may develop as the session progresses.]
