The match was piayed at. U;.rk.;:gton in cold, wet wo.r.lier, bcioio "JOOO spectators. Cumberland, 1.; : .ac firs; ha.:, played with a strong wind, but were < - ;iily dangerous with forward rushes. The New Seaknders first mastered these forward movements, and then assumed superiority. It mattered little if they were beaten in tho serums. They passed the ball on every opportunity. The quickness of the attacks bewildered Cumberland, who were penalised during a hot attack, Gardiner kicking a 50a 1. Soon after. Hall, with a line burst of speed, scored a try, which Gardiner converted. Excellent passing resulted in Davidson getting the next try and Gardiner again converted.
Gardiner himself scored the next try, which he failed to improve on. The visitors in the second half were less conspicuous though they had the advantage of the wind. They seemed to lack condition. Desmond scored their only try in this spell, and Thornburton scored Cumberland's try. The New Zealand team was: Kirwan, Brown, Davidson, Cole, Desmond, Brisbane, Hall, Menzies, Thomas, Herring, Gardiner, Mason, and Avery.
