N.Z. NAVY SLOOPS.
WORK AT RUSSELL. [THE PBESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, January 9. HjM.S. LSburnum lias returned to port after an absence of eleven days. Leaving Auckland on December 28th, the Laburnum first called at Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier, and next proceeded to" Whangaruru, Whangaroa, and Russell. On her return run she called at Kawau.
; Tije trip was in the nature of a trial run. the sloop having recently completea refitting at Russell. Preliminary work taking soundings and checking charts in anticipation of the visit of H.M.S. Renown was done.
The Laburnum, accompanied by the Veronica, is to leave Auckland for Russell during the latter half of the present month to take soundings and to prepare an anchorage for the Renown..
The majority of the Laburnum's crew, who ha,ve completed their time on the New Zealand station, will leave for England this month. Tho now men are-due to reach Wellington by the Corinthio on Monday.
