ASIATIC MENACE.
CONTROLLING IMMIGRATION. Replying to a letter from Mr K. Snow, secretary of the Cbristchureli Tramway Employees Union, addressed to the Minister for Immigration, in he urged the necessity for prohibiting or restricting the immigration of Asiatics, the Hon. Mr Anderson (Minister for Customs) has replied stating that in 1920 legislation was passed that gave the Government ample power to impose an effective restriction on the number of aliens or race-aliens, including Asiatics, entering Xew Zealand for permanent residence. As far as the Minister was aware, no other country had a more effective means of controlling such immigration. To show the effect of legislation that, came into force on April Ist, 1921, the Minister supplied the following particulars of numbers of Indians and Chinese admitted to New Zealand :
Permits for permanent residence, the Minister added, had not been issued to persons of Chinese nationality during last year.
