WELLINGTON RATES.

COMING IN FREELY. [THE PEESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 8. Wellington is in a happy position this year regarding the payment of the combined rates by its citizens. The total rate charged was £105,881 4s 2d. and the amount collected up to last night was £334,619 17b lid, leaving outstanding £71,261 6s 3d. This is well ahead of last year's collection when at tho end of January only £300,01U had been collected. Possibly one reason for the more, prompt response is that this year tho demands were sent out a month earlier. It is at any rate a very satisfactory position, especially as a good deal was said by shopkeepers and others of the tightness of money towards the end of the year.
